Spring 2017 CEE589-BRI: Highway Bridge Design

Homework Assignment No. 3

Due Date: Tuesday, March 7th
The figures shown below are for a 4-span continuous steel bridge with cast-in-place concrete
deck. The deck has a thickness of 8 inches and is supported on six W30x108 steel girders in the
longitudinal direction. The bridge has a clear roadway width equal to 49 ft. and a skew angle at
all supports equal to 25o. You may assume that the abutments and piers are acting as pinned
supports.

1) Use the Muller-Breslau method to predict the shapes of the influence functions of the bridge
in the longitudinal direction for the following actions:

a) Vertical reaction at support 1

b) Shear force at the right side of support 2
c) Positive moment at mid-span between supports 2 and 3.
d) Negative moment at support 3

2) Plot the exact influence functions for the same four actions of question 1 and use them to
compute the maximum possible values for these actions under the HL-93 live load. Show the
exact location of the live load in each case.

3) Determine the maximum absolute shear and positive moment in the longitudinal direction
under a single HS-20 design truck load. You may ignore the transverse direction of the bridge in
your analysis.

4) Use the beam-line modeling approach to determine the design shear and positive moment
values for the interior and exterior girders under the HS-20 design truck load.

5) Determine the live load design moment of the cast-in-place concrete deck using: a) influence
function approach, and b) AASHTO live-load moment table.

6) Use the grillage modeling method to determine the design shear and positive moment values
for the interior and exterior girders under the HS-20 design truck load (you may assume single or
multiple trucks) and compare the obtained values with the answers from question 4.
