Class Notes Surface Area: Prisms & Cylinders 1

What is surface area? -The total area of the surface of a 3 Dimensional figure.
- Adding the areas of all the faces of a 3D figure.
- The amount of wrapping needed to wrap a present

Prisms and Cylinders :

have 2 parallel bases and a lateral area made up of the faces between the bases.

Here are some examples of prisms/cylinders. These are not the only types! More
examples include hexagonal prism, rectangular prism, and trapezoidal prism.

Cylinder

Surface Area = 2B + Ph
Where B = area of 1 base, P = perimeter of the base, and h = height (length between bases)

Example
Name of figure: triangular prism
The base is a triangle
Formula to use for base: (bh)/2
Area of base (12*9)/2 = 54
Area of both bases = 54 * 2 = 108
Lateral area formula (Perimeter of base) * (height)
Perimeter of base 9+12+15 = 36 Height 18
Lateral Area = 648
Add area of bases + lateral area = 108 + 648 = 756 cm2
