Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background and importance of the On-the-Job Training

The Bachelor of Arts is a four year degree course which

offers two major areas of specialization, English and

Mathematics, under the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS)

department. On-the-Job training is an important phase in life of

a student. It comprises one hundred eighty-nine hours of hands-on

training on a chosen cooperating agency designed to acquire

relevant knowledge and skills at work.

It is not only a mere requirement for graduation but it is

also an opportunity for student to gain actual experiences and

skills that could made them physically, mentally and emotionally

prepared for future undertakings in entering the world of work.

It is an activity that refined the skills and knowledge of the

students and could help them deal with the responsibility with

the ever-changing environment in their workplace.

This training was intended to enhance and develop

personality to become competitive individual in the field of

office work and give them opportunity to acquire desirable habits

and ethics and practices good working attitudes in preparations

for future employment.

On-the-Job training enables student to become independent

and develop their confidence to perform all assigned task in a

productive manner during the period of attachment. It broadens

the trainees perspective of knowledge that this activity could

offer. The students were expected to be more efficient and

competitive individual equipped with the necessary skills and

experiences they gained in the training thus increasing their

opportunity for advancement in the field of office management.

Objectives of the On-the-Job Training

In line with the School of Arts and Sciences goal to

provide highly competent and competitive professionals, manager,

executive business/ public leaders and entrepreneurs responsive

to the needs of dynamic environment, the practical program aims

to:

1. Provides students handling tasks to build self-

confidence and self motivation in professional

growth.
2. Enable the students to gain experiences, relate and

apply the theories he/she learns in school to real

office situations and problems.


3. To assists individuals in developing professional

and interpersonal relationship necessary for success

in the workplace.

Profile of the Cooperating Agency

Historical Background
The emergence of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics

was spurred by the government efforts to improve the agricultural

database in the country. In the past, the agricultural data

system suffered from significant gaps, some duplications and

occasional issues on the relevance of some data series to users.

The major reasons were: (1) the agency responsible for the

agricultural statistics, the Bureau of Agricultural Economics

(BAEcon), was originally set up as a user rather than a producer

of statistics, (2) the development of agriculture statistics

received a very low priority in the sharing of limited resources

allotted to the statistical system, and (3) the widespread

duplication of statistical activities among government agencies

resulting in conflicting figures and confusion among data users.


To address this situation, the BAS was established as

one of the seven (7) bureaus of the Department of Agriculture

under Executive Order No. 116 issued on January 30, 1987, to take

charge of the production of statistics on agriculture, fishery

and related fields. The BAS has assumed most of the functions of

its predecessor, the BAEcon. In year 2000, the BAS structural

organization was strengthened and reoriented pursuant to the

relevant provisions of DA Administrative Order No. 6 series of

1998 in compliance with the provisions of the Agriculture and

Fisheries Modernization Act or RA8435 of 1997. This law

designates BAS as the central information soure and server of the

National Information Network (INN) of Department of Agriculture.

Mission
The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics is the principal government

agency for the efficient collection, processing, analysis and

dissemination of official statistics on agriculture and fisheries

as inputs to policy and decision towards a sustainable

agricultural development.

Vision
The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics is a credible agricultural

statistical organization delivering high quality products and

services by a competent workforce, using appropriate technologies

to support the information needs of stakeholders.

Time and Place of OJT

The OJT was conducted from January 17, 2012 to February 30,

2012 at Bureau of Agricultural Statistics Provincial Operation

Center Aklan Cultural Center, Kalibo, Aklan. The trainee was

assigned at Bureau of Agricultural Statistics Provincial

Operation Center under Sir Manuelito V. Delegencia, PASO. The

trainee office hours were from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00

p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily for four days of working week.

Chapter 2

STRATEGIES AND METHODOLOGIES

This Chapter presents the strategies and methodologies

applied by the trainee during his training conducted at the BAS

POC. It includes the actual hands-on activities during the on-

the-job training.

Actual On-The-Job Training

Dubbed as a Data collector, the trainee performed different

tasks and activities during the training. This includes:

Attending seminars. During his first two days at the office,

the trainee attends the seminar Survey on Characterizing Small

Farmers of the Philippines, which Objectives is to generate

benchmark statistics on the socioeconomic characteristics of

farmers that will support the prioritization and development of

agricultural programs and project. And on February 14, 2012 he

also attended the seminar on 2012 Survey of Food Demand for

Agricultural Commodities. The Objectives of the survey is to

generate data on per capita consumption of rice, corn and other

agricultural food commodities.

Reading some article. The trainee felt nervous when he is

assigned to read some articles on the survey because he is so

bashful in facing crowd. Having conscious of what people will say

to him after he reads. But the trainee thought positive side that

anything happened it just a mistake.

Surveying. The trainee goes to Barangay Caano, Kalibo,

Aklan to conduct a survey on Characterizing Small Farmers of the

Philippines. During his first day of survey, the trainee

experiences the hardship in going to that said barangay because

the tricycle wont go immediately unless it is full. To consumed

time the trainee learned that it is easy to go to Barangay Caano

if you wait along the National Highway going to New Washington.

The trainee felt nervous in asking question to the

respondent because it is his first time to conduct a survey

without other person accompanied him and doesnt know how to get

the cooperation of the respondent. The trainee learned through

observation that, you should be polite every time, be patient

enough and be lively because the questionnaire is too long the

interviewee might get bored.

Editing the data gathered. The trainee analyzed the data

gathered from the respondent. The trainee changed, arranged, gave

the corresponding value of the product and translated the

information or data gathered from the respondent for better

understanding.

other related tasks. The trainee did other related tasks such as:

Sending letter to JRS Express.
Computer works such as making files on the computer,

encoding and printing out the documents.


Paying telephone bills.
Cleaning the office, washed the dishes, securing all

windows and doors are properly locked and all office

lights and other electrical equipments are properly

discharged and off.

Results and Observations


This presents the results and observations gathered by the

trainee during the conduct of the OJT activities. Specifically,

this includes the problems encountered, the solutions take to

solve the problems and the lessons learned during the training.
Problems Encountered
1. The trainee didnt know how to troubleshoot computer

and printer when something went wrong.


2. The trainee received unclear instructions.
3. The trainee is unfamiliar with some office

terminologies.
4. The trainee easily gets tired in locating the house of

the sample respondent.


5. The trainee loses his voice because the questionnaire

to be asked is consisting of 14 pages.


6. The trainee is confused on things especially when

there are many tasks assigned.


Solutions Made
1. The staff taught the trainee how to troubleshoot

computer and printer in case something went wrong. The

staff also advised the trainee to take time to avoid

haste.

2. The trainee courteously requested the staff to repeat

the instruction for clarification. The trainee also

texted the staff and ask for clarification of the

assigned tasks.
3. The trainee asked the staff of what does it mean when

they say such office terminologies.


4. The trainee politely asked for assistance to the

people who know that specific person.


5. The trainee asked his field supervisor for 2 days of

rest so that his voice will recharge.


6. The trainee had learned to organized things and

concentrated to the tasks that should be done first.

Lessons Learned

1. The trainee observed proper time management, organizing

tasks to save time, patience and passion to work.


2. The trainee learned professionalism.
3. The trainee learned to ask with courtesy.
4. The trainee love and enjoy working with other people

and gain more friends and mentors which helps him in

times of doubt.
5. The trainee learned to socialize different person and

had overcome his shyness in facing other people.

Specifically in conducting survey on different

barangay, such as Brgy. Caano and Brgy. Linabuan Norte


6. The trainee learned to follow instruction. Especially

in computer works such as encoding and printing.

7. As a trainee dont hesitate to ask for assistance to

avoid miscommunication.
8. Through observation and constant practice, this

training would serve as a training ground in the

future.

Chapter 3

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary, conclusions and

recommendations gathered from the daily activities of the trainee

in the office.

Summary

Every second semester, the fourth year Bachelor of Arts

students were required to undergo an on-the-job training in the

different offices in Aklan with a minimum of one hundred eighty-

nine hours. The trainee opted Bureau of Agricultural Statistics

Provincial Operation Center as cooperating agency. The main goal

of the trainee is to gain information about and experiences in

the field f office works as a springboard for future employment.

The trainee molded the trainee to become independent in

performing the assigned tasks efficiently, learn to live on her

own and adjust to the new environment and with the people around

her. The trainee learned to be independent and develops sense of

responsibility in performing the assigned tasks. Furthermore, the

training provides a glimpse in office works which the trainee

could apply in the future.

After a month of training and real office works exposure,

the trainee was equipped with the skills that were learned in the

four corners of the room and his intellectual progress and

knowledge towards technology were heightened. The trainees

perseverance made his personality whole that he may be ready for

new challenges in life.

Conclusions

Base on the training experiences gathered by the OJT trainee

at the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics Provincial Operation

Center, the conclusions have been drawn.

The different activities gave insights to the trainee the

desirable working habits, thus enhancing harmonious human

relations to the office staff. The trainee also learned

manipulative and clerical skills that may better prepare the

trainee in the future employment. The working potential of the

trainee have been developed during the duration of the training.

Recommendation

For the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics POC:

1. The office must be bigger enough and the ceiling must

be renovated.
2. The office must have an additional staff.
3. They must have more cabinet so that their files and

other documents will be properly arrange and keep.


4. They must orient the trainee to be familiar with the

different office activities, office facilities and

equipment.

For the Bachelor of Arts Program:

1. The student should be exposing to offices or

agencies that are related to their field of

expertise.
2. Student should be given more computer works so that

they can practice their skills and through that they

can acquire new knowledge and information which will

helps them in the future.

3. The student should be given more time of training to

gain more information and knowledge from different

office works which they can use in their future

employment.
