FOUR YEAR B.TECH. DEGREE EXAMINATION - APRIL, 2016'
SIXTH SEMESTER EXAMINATION
CIVIL ENGINEERING
STEEL STRUCTURES DESIGN AND DRAWING (SSDD)
(scHEME - 2013)
Time: 3 Ilours Max. Marlts: 70
Note : Answer any ONE question from Part A and any THREE questions from Part B.
Use of IS:800-2007 code, Steel Tables and Extracts from code is permitted.
PART A
1. Design a built-up column with four angles. The coiumn is -13 ^m- long and
supp-orts
- a factored axial compressive load of 1100 kN. The ends of the column
ur" h"ld i.t position and restrained against rotation. Design a suitable
connecting system. Use steel of grade Fe410. Draw the elevation and plan of
(28)
the column '., ,
2. A column section ISHB 350 @ 661.2 N/m carries a factored axial compressive
load of 1800 kN and factored bending moment of 120 kNm, Design the base
plate and its connections.
If the factored bending moment is increased to 200 kNm redesign the base and
connections. Assume concrete pedestal of M20 grade. Draw the sectional
(28)
elevation and pian.
PART B
Turn Over
4. (a) Explain different theorems of plastic analysis. (5)
(b) Find out the value of plastic modulus for a square of.side r, bent about a
diagonal. (9)
7. Design a steel beam section for supporting root of a big hall for the following
data and apply the usual checks. Assume steel of grade Fe410.
Clear span = 6.5 m
End bearings = 150 mm
C/C spacing of beams = 3 m
Imposed load on the beam = 10 kN/m2
Dead load (inclusive of self'weight) = 6 kN/m2
Restriction of beam d.epth = 350 mm
The compression flange of the beam is laterally supported throughout. (14)
