Architecture March 2017
Architecture March 2017
The outcome of three lectures held at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles in March 2012 given by Peter
Eisenman, Jeffery Kipnis, and Thom Mayne this book introduces the interrelation of these
events in the form of an abstract symposium about the current state of the discipline, and about
its role at the school. It combines with the real symposium on the thesis content that took place,
which ultimately became a running commentary on contemporary architecture. The intersection of
intros, debates, lectures, and audience queries framed each proposition as a provisional
hypothesis immediately subject to challenge and reformulation. With contributions by Eric Owen
Moss.

The design for the legendary artist's house Maison d' Artiste is one of the key works of Dutch
avant-garde movement De Stijl. Created in 1923 by painter Theo van Doesburg and architect
Cornelis van Eesteren, the design shows what De Stijl aspired to a new everyday environment
through the harmonious fusion of painting and architecture. This book explores the revolutionary
cultural importance of the design and its significance for the history of De Stijl.

By nature the architecture and urbanism of Southeast Asia is always hybrid and eclectic, and it is
this very diversity and acculturation that is reflected in the city of Mandalay, Myanmar. In 2005 a
joint program between the National University of Singapore and the University of Malaya was
inaugurated, aimed at nurturing new generations of architects and cultivating new and
sustainable approaches to heritage management. This is the fifth book published by the project.
With detailed documentation, it presents two timber monasteries situated in the former royal
capital, revealing their urban context, significant architectural elements, conservation histories,
existing conditions, and more.

Based in Krakw, BudCud operates within the fields of architecture and urbanism. Currently led
by Mateusz Adamczyk and Agata Wozniczka, the office produces work that is contextually
conscious and heavily influenced by the project environment, both physical and cultural, yet also
has a playful, experimental approach rooted in an understanding of social interactions and
habitable landscapes. This monograph presents more than 20 projects developed since
BudCuds inception in 2007, together with comic diagrams and an essay by ukasz
Wojciechowski. From urban districts and parks to interiors and street furniture, the penchant for a
strong narrative persists.

'Schweizweit' portrays a snapshot of the architectural production in Switzerland in the year 2016.
Whilst the image of Swiss architecture, especially internationally, is still strongly characterised by
the 1990s and minimalism, the current constructed reality is more heterogeneous and regionally
differentiated. In cooperation with around 160 architectural practices from throughout the country
a visual atlas of current Swiss architecture has been created. This book shows the commonalities
and differences in the themes, content, and formal strategies that Swiss architects focus on
today.

'SANAA. Sejima & Nishizawa. 1990-2017' gathers the complete oeuvre of Kazuyo Sejima and
Ryue Nishizawa over almost three decades of work of the three studios they lead in Tokyo, and
that has produced prominent buildings like the Zollverein School of Design in Essen, the Rolex
Center in Lausanne, the Louvre-Lens Museum, or their recent center for the Grace Farms
Foundation in Connecticut. With articles by Luis Fernndez-Galiano and the architects
themselves, this monograph examines the principles and methods behind the seeming simplicity
of the work of the two Japanese architects, and unveils the keys to the radicalness of their
architecture, extremely light and immaterial.

"Among the many clothing types in our wardrobe, none leads a more unappreciated existence
than the sock. Wavering between undergarment and outerwear, the staggering amount of
pressure and force applied to the sock each time we take a step forward attests to its silent
resilience. It is thus, not without irony, that the common definition of quality socks lies precisely in
how little we take notice of its presence; a good pair of socks becomes one that is absent when
worn on the feet..."

This volume presents a selection of more than 30 recent buildings from around the globe that all
have one thing in common: masonry structure. Not only does the novel variation of styles seen
here meet specific functions and programmes, it also reflects current building requirements of
high-strength, lightweight, sustainable, high thermal shock resistance, and more. Throughout a
range of climates, terrains, and cultural contexts, this small spectrum of projects exemplifies the
innovation and diversity found in masonry today. Its comprehensive analysis of the latest
developments in masonry materials and structures is accompanied by abundant photographs,
plans, and drawings.

In 2014, as part of the Venice Architecture Biennale, Florencia Costa carried out a project that
involved repurposing Palazzo Mora, one of the citys historic buildings. She conceived a
methodology of action Whos Afraid of Architecture and, reminiscent of Le Corbusiers final
project (the Civil Hospital in Venice), created a series of artists residences in the attic along with
a new exhibition walkway. The architect transformed what already existed, dismantling it,
reassembling it, revealing the primary and secondary wooden structure typically used to build
Venetian palazzi, and eliminating the traces of bourgeois life that over time had become stratified
in the areas originally destined for the service staff.

What do you do, as an architect, when it is as if your profession has been abolished and you
would like to know whether what you have built is actually any good? Marlies Rohmer revisited 25
buildings for which she once had great expectations. She spoke with commissioners, residents,
and users, which resulted in a sometimes moving, often hilarious, and always informative
exploration of what really counts in architecture.

Japan is a land of earthquakes and typhoons, yet its forests are abundant with durable hinoki
(cypress) timber. Yutaka Saitos anthology on the nature, materiality, and history of Japanese
architecture examines 29 religious structures and temples. Built for long-lasting endurance, with
an architectural continuity that in some instances has been maintained for more than a
millennium, these primarily wooden buildings are the result of specific natural conditions. Saito
expertly guides the reader through a richly illustrated analysis of Japans historic periods and
influences, detailing innovations and techniques that have contributed to the essence of its
traditional architecture.

The yearbook features seventeen exemplary design projects that reflect the current state of
Dutch urban design and landscape architecture. Themed around the question of how spatial
designers can find their place in the development projects that are set to shape dialogue in the
field over the coming decades, from major transitions concerning environment and climate, to
local initiatives and market actors, it explores exemplary projects both within and outside of the
Netherlands. Highlights include Cape Square in Durrs (AL), Slow Mile in Mechelen (BE),
Rivierpark in Nijmegen, Fort bij Vechten in Bunnik, and Circulair Buiksloterham in Amsterdam.

Recycled Theory is a multidisciplinary dictionary made of entries in form of texts, drawings and
quotes, which explore the concept of recycling in design cultures and in the theories that nurture
them. Usually we recycle things, objects, spaces but more often we return on principles and
approaches to rearrange them, put them back into circulation, and override them. The practice of
recycling is therefore placed in an area of negotiation between memory and amnesia, it brings out
the unexpected self-regeneration potential of what exists. The words here collected (from
amnesia to zone) identify materials, procedures, ambiguities, deviations, and potential nexus
of recycling.

The SOLID Harvard GSD series gathers material from the four Symposia on Architecture held at
the Harvard University Graduate School of Design from 2014 to 2016, entitled All that is Solid.
This issue, the third and final part of the series, offers a close reading of the interior in the context
of contemporary architecture. It contains recent projects and relevant voices in support of the
importance of the interior and the intimate material knowledge architects must demonstrate. With
contributions from Richard Sennett, Kiel Moe, Salmaan Craig, and Iaki balos, it not only
reflects the current complexity and the challenges faced by the discipline, but also traces future
paths to explore.
