pressure,cholesterol,triglyceridesandinsulinresistance.Risksof
coronaryheartdisease,ischemicstrokeandtype2diabetesmellitus
increasesteadilywithincreasingbodymassindex(BMI),ameasureof
weightrelativetoheight.Raisedbodymassindexalsoincreasesthe
riskofcancerofthebreast,colon,prostate,endometrium,kidneyand
gallbladder.Mortalityratesincreasewithincreasingdegreesof
overweight,asmeasuredbybodymassindex.Toachieveoptimum
health,themedianbodymassindexforanadultpopulationshouldbein
therangeof21to23kg/m2,whilethegoalforindividualsshouldbeto
maintainbodymassindexintherange18.5to24.9kg/m2.Thereis
increasedriskofcomorbiditiesforbodymassindex25.0to29.9,and
moderatetosevereriskofcomorbiditiesforbodymassindex30or
greater.
In2014,39%ofadultsaged18+wereoverweight(BMI25kg/m2)
(39%menand40%ofwomen).In2014,39%ofadultsaged18+were
overweight(BMI25kg/m2)(39%ofmenand40%ofwomen)and13%
wereobese(BMI30kg/m2)(11%ofmenand15%ofwomen).Thus,
nearly2billionadultsworldwideareoverweightand,ofthese,morethan
halfabillionareobese.
TheprevalenceofoverweightandobesitywerehighestintheWHO
RegionsoftheAmericas(61%foroverweightinbothsexes,and27%
forobesity)andlowestintheWHORegionforSouthEastAsia(22%
overweightinbothsexesand5%forobesity).IntheWHORegionofthe
AmericasandEuropeanandEasternMediterraneanRegionsover50%
ofwomenwereoverweight.Inallthreeoftheseregions,roughlyhalfof
overweightwomenareobese(25%inEurope,24%intheEastern
Mediterranean,30%intheAmericas).InallWHOregionswomenwere
morelikelytobeobesethanmen.IntheWHOAfrican,Eastern
MediterraneanandSouthEastAsiaRegions,womenhadroughlydouble
theobesityprevalenceofmen.
Theprevalenceofraisedbodymassindexincreaseswiththeincome
levelofcountries.Theprevalenceofoverweightinhighincome
countrieswasmorethandoublethatoflowandlowermiddleincome
countries.Forobesity,theoverallprevalenceisoverfourtimeshigherin
highincomecountriescomparedtolowincomecountries.Women's
obesitywasmarkedlyhigherthanmen's,withtheexceptionofhigh
incomecountrieswhereitwassimilar.Inlowandlowermiddleincome
countries,obesityamongwomenwasmorethandoublethatamong
men.
