1. Know the small group communication dynamics that differ from those in two or three
person contexts and how they operate in small groups.
2. Understand the types of leadership styles in small group settings, how they function,
and when each style is most appropriate to the task at hand.
3. Know the importance of information in small group decision-making and how
information should be processed for maximum usefulness within the group.
4. Be able to employ the primary methods of decision making appropriately in various
contexts.
5. Recognize the impact of public commitment to a proposition on small group
interaction and how to manage it in a positive and constructive manner.
6. Understand the purpose, function and utility of disagreement and conflict within
small groups and know how to manage it in positive and constructive ways.
7. Employ different communication strategies in voluntary organization's small groups
as contrasted with those that may be used in business and industry.
8. Understand the various interaction styles of group members and how they may
complement or conflict with the styles of other group members.
9. Function effectively in groups with varying problem-solving tasks from closed-ended
tasks where one solution is desired and open-ended tasks where many solutions are
possible and the goal is to determine the best course of action.
10. Understand the relationship of time requirements to effective decision-making.

COURSE POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Instructional Method
This is an online distance learning course. Each weeks assignments and readings are
summarized on the Course Calendar, accessed from the Course Information button in
Blackboard. It takes a great deal of discipline, self-motivation, and effective time
management skills to successfully complete an online course. Many students find it
helpful to set aside specific times each week to work on course assignments.
Grades
All grades will be maintained in Blackboards online grade book. Students are
responsible for tracking their progress by referring to the online grade book. Students
can generally expect to receive grades and feedback within seven days of the
assignment due date. If exceptions occur, the instructor may notify students of changes
to this expectation.
Students are required to submit work on time for a chance to receive credit. Deadlines
for each week/assignment are summarized on the course calendar. Students should
check the calendar frequently for deadlines and to be aware of what to expect next.
Deadlines are subject to change.
Students are responsible for timely assignment submission. Should a computer system
or network go down, students must still turn in work in a timely manner. Dont wait until
the last minute. Plan ahead by seeking alternative means for submitting work before
needed. Local libraries and all Ivy Tech Community College campuses can serve as
alternative resources. Contact the closest/most convenient campus or other public lab
for schedules and Internet availability. Not having access to the required software on a
home or work computer is not a legitimate excuse for turning in homework late.
Make-Up Policy
Late assignments will be assigned a grade of 0 unless a student has received
prior approval from the professor. If a student has a problem or scheduling conflict
that prevents the student from submitting an assignment on time, the student should
contact the professor immediately. The professor will determine if the seriousness of the
problem warrants an extension on the assignment. Unless absolutely unavoidable,
students need to contact their instructor before missing the deadline not after.
Instructors have the right to decline accepting work for any credit after a deadline
passes with a few specific exceptions, including but not limited to:
While it is important to be timely and on-schedule throughout any course, students need
to be aware of an important college policy. Ivy Tech performs administrative drops for
students who do not attend class early in the semester. Attendance in an online course
is determined by whether a student has submitted work or not. Assignments may
actually be due on another day (see course calendar), but students need to turn in
something worth points before the NW deadline in order to avoid being dropped
for non-attendance.
To avoid being dropped for non-attendance, students must submit some assignment
from the course calendar no later than Monday, January 30th, 11:59pm. - Eastern
Standard Time.
No, students do not have to come to campus for this course. There are no activities,
labs, or assessments that require students to come to campus.
The last day to withdraw from this course is Saturday, April 15th.
Right of Revision
The college reserves the right to change any statements, policies or scheduling as
necessary. Students will be informed promptly of any and all changes.

NOTE: Course messages are very different from email. Students should carefully
review the information below to ensure they are sending and receiving course

Email
All students must use the email function of the course for course-related
communications. Students can send email from within the course in Blackboard, but
will not receive responses inside the course. All emails are received in the Campus
Connect email system. Students can also use the Campus Connect email system to
send email.

ASSIGNMENTS & GRADING
How is my grade calculated?
Discussion Boards
There will be a total of thirteen (13) discussion boards throughout the course. During
sessions involving a DB, you will be required to post a discussion-board topic/question
by 11:55 P.M. EST on Thursday. You will also be required to respond to discussion-
board posts from two of your classmates by 11:55 P.M. EST on Sunday. Points will be
allotted based on the quality of the interactions and the ability of each student to engage
in meaningful dialogue with classmates.
Chapter Quizzes
There will be a quiz over each of the 12 chapters of the textbook to be covered during
the semester. Quizzes may contain multiple choice, true/false, matching, and/or fill-in-
the-blank items. Each quiz be completed by 11:55 P.M. EST on Sunday of that session
week.
Reflection Papers
For these papers, you will be directed to respond to a specific question or set of
questions related to the topic of discussion for that session. Each will require critical
thought and application of your own thoughts and values to an interpersonal
communication topic. The papers should be 1-2 pages, typed, double-spaced, 1-inch
margins, 12 point Times New Roman font.
Exams
Exams may include some combination of multiple choice, true/false, and matching.
None of the exams is comprehensive; they cover only the material discussed since the
previous exam. The exams will have a time limit and each exam must be completed in
one sitting. This means that you may not leave the exam and come back to it later; if
you leave the exam (either by choice or because your internet connection fails) then you
will be locked out of the exam.
In order to give students adequate time to complete exams, the exams will be available
from 8 a.m. (EST Eastern Standard Time) on the Monday before they are due until
11:59 p.m. on the day they are due. Students will have only one attempt to take the
exam within the allotted time, so its important to allow ample time before starting the
exam. The exams will be automatically graded, and the grades posted to the grade
book in Blackboard.
To help keep your assignment due dates organized, there is a calendar tool in
Blackboard. To find it, follow these steps:

All final grades will be figured on total weighted percentage, rounded up to the next full
percentage point, and using the following scale:
