Part 1: Project Planning

Brainstorm: What could we do to answer the question?

When creating your own lab procedure there are a few things to consider.

1) What is the Independent variable (The aspect of the experiment you will change)?
Remember you can only change one thing at a time.

2) What needs to be kept the same or constant between the different trials (cups)?

3) What data will we collect during our experiment? Think both

Quantitative(measurable/ Numbers) (This is the Dependent Variable) and Qualitative
(observations)
Part 2: Creating a Procedure
Use the information from the front page to create a detailed procedure for your
experiment. The procedure should be clear so that anyone in the school could
complete the procedure simply by reading. You may include pictures of the set up.

Procedure

List of Materials.

Picture of Set up, label accordingly

Part 3: Data Tables
Now that you have made your procedure, create a data table or tables to record the
quantitative and qualitative data you will collect during the experiment. It is
important to set this up ahead of time so you can keep your data neat and organized.

Part 4: Processing and Displaying Data

Use the grid on the following page to graph your results. Be sure to include an
appropriate title as well as a key showing what each line represents. Your graph
should also have appropriate labels, intervals, etc
Graph Planning
Title:____________________________________________________________________________________
X axis: _____________________________ Range: ______________ Interval_________
Y axis: _____________________________ Range: ______________ Interval_________
Will it need a key?
Part 5: Analysis Questions

1. Describe the trends in your data. This should explain the trend in each cup and
included data to support each one.

2. Go back and read the question that you were testing. Provide an answer to the
question using data to support your final answer.

3. On Friday, we did a reading about conductors and insulators. What is a

conductor? What is an insulator?
4. Based on these definitions what can you determine about the two different
materials that you tested? Was one a better insulator than the other? Which
one? Why? Did it do a better job keeping the heat out or in?

5. Thinking back to our environmental unit, do some research to determine the

environmental impact each cup has on the environment. Is one a better choice for the
environment then the other? Why or Why not? List your sources below.
