Consider a source whose position and strength are given by (a(t),b(t)) and m(t) respectively. The
function (x, y, t) which is harmonic everywhere for b<0 has to satisfy the following equations:
1. 2 = 0 in the fluid domain
2. tt + gy = 0 on y=0
3. The function is assumed to be of the form = m log r + 0 ,where 0 is harmonic everywhere
in the domain.
4. limy = 0
5. (x, 0, 0) = t (x, 0, 0) = 0
= m log r m log r1 + 0 (1)
p p
Here,r = (x a)2 + (y b)2 and r1 = (x a)2 + (y + b)2 .Now,let us perform a partial deriva-
tive of m log r, m log r1 .
m log r m log r1 m(t)(y + b(t))
= = p (2)
y y (x a)2 + (y b)2
Now,this operation has been performed,as when the complete is made to satisfy the equation(2),this
term will make the right hand side, leading to equation (3).
2gm(t)(y + b(t))
0tt + g0y = p (3)
(x a)2 + (y b)2
Using the well known identity (6) in (5) will yield (7).

x2 + y 2 0
Z Z
s2 0 + g0y = 2g dk est ek(y+b) eik(xa) mdt (7)
0 0
So,as to satisfy (4),we expect the function 0 to be having exponential decay(eky ).Thus:

Z Z

0 = 2g 2 + gk
est ek(y+b) eik(xa) mdt (10)
0 s 0
p
The transform of (s2 + gk)1 is (gk) sin gkt and applying the convolution theorem would lead
to (11).
Z r Z t
g p
0 = 2 dk d (sin gk(t ))ek(y+b) eik(xa) m (11)
0 k t0
Now,performing the integration with respect to time and incorporating the limits will yield (12).
Z t p
p (1 cos( gk(t t0 )
d sin gk(t ) = (12)
t0 gk
This is the Greens function employed in the thesis. Most of the derivation is carried out along the
lines of Wehausen and Laitone[1]
