The premise of the e-learning module is to teach the students the first ten elements of the

periodic table in order to begin learning chemistry. The students will use visual association to

learn how to memorize the elements. See the appendix for screen images. The first part of the

lesson introduces visual association and explanations the concepts that the brain uses to visual

association with memorizing information ("Neuroscience For Kids - functional divisions," n.d.).

Learning the basics of the periodic table is important when learning chemistry

(Helmenstine, 2017). The periodic table is arranged with elements that have similar properties

(Helmenstine, 2017). The purpose of the table helps chemistry students and chemists are able to

understand the types of chemical reactions. The article, The Top 5 Methods for Memorizing the

Periodic Table, discusses other methods of memorizing the periodic table for future reference

("How to Learn the Periodic Table | Top 5 Ways," n.d.).

The students will access the module through an LMS link. The students will be

introduced to the lesson and the learning objectives. The objectives are as follows:

Upon completion of this lesson, you will:

1. Be able to identify the first ten element of the table in sequence.

2. Be able to match all ten elements to a visual image.
3. Be able to describe what each element is used in or what it is used for.

The students will begin the module and navigate through the screens using a forward arrow

in the lower right corner of the screen. The students will have navigation buttons at the top right

of the screen. One button is a house to return to Home at the beginning of the module and

there is an X beside the Home button which will terminate the module.

After the student begins the module and finishes reading the introduction pages, they will

navigate forward. The first section shows an image of a house floor plan with numbers located

on the image. Students will be instructed to click on each number and the name of the element

with a description of the element and a visual image that will assist the student for the

association. The student will then be directed to continue pressing the numbers to review all the

elements.

Once the student completes the element review, the next screen will consist of a short

activity two question assessment. The first question has three elements and the student is asked

to drag and drop each element into the table on the right side of the screen in the appropriate

sequence. The second activity question is the list of elements in random order and the student

will use the drop down block to place the elements in order.

After the completion of the activity, the student will press the forward arrow navigation

button and be directed to a page that shows the entire periodic table. This table shows the

student all the elements and their locations in the periodic table.

Once the student reviews the periodic table of elements the next screen will consist of a

link to a website for them to take a timed quiz placing the elements in the appropriate order

("First Ten Elements of the Periodic Table Quiz - By duckiesuccumbs," n.d.). Once the student has

completed the module, they will be directed to exit.
