Bluestone win prestigious green award

Bluestone National Park Resort’s commitment to environmental responsibility has been

recognised with a prestigious national award.

At the Business in the Community 2010 awards held in Cardiff this week, Bluestone CEO
William McNamara was presented with the Wales Environment Award.

An annual celebration of responsible business in Wales, the BitC awards are the UK’s
most influential, independent, peer-assessed corporate responsibility awards.

To win the Environment award, Bluestone had to demonstrate how it had reduced
impact on the environment. It did this by highlighting a wide range of design and
operational measures, including a biomass-fuelled energy centre; solar panels to
provide hot water for 100 lodges and energy reduction targets incorporated into every
manager’s performance indicators.

Other measures included a range of energy-saving initiatives and joint project with
Envirowise to reduce incoming packaging, which cut by 34% the amount of waste going
to landfill.

Mr McNamara commented: “I am delighted that Bluestone has won this award and
honoured to accept it on behalf of the Bluestone team.

“With the recession and the myriad difficulties inherent in getting any new business off
the ground, it’s fair to say that the last couple of years have had their challenges. But
our commitment to environmental responsibility has never wavered.

“We know full well that there will always be room for improvement, and never room for
complacency - but I feel this award to be recognition of the huge effort that the
Bluestone team has made already, is making as we speak, and will continue to make.”

Note to editors:

1: Bluestone is a national park resort. Located within the heart of the renowned
Pembrokeshire National Park, the concept consists of luxury timber lodges set around a
traditional Welsh village. Guests can use Bluestone as a base from which to explore
Pembrokeshire, sample its activities and attractions, and absorb its culture, heritage and
natural splendour.
2. Ultimately, the development will comprise 335 timber lodges and 60 cottage/studio
units in a woodland environment surrounding a village providing leisure, retail, catering
and other support services. Activity facilities will include an all-weather waterpark, snow
centre and sports club.
3: The first phase, comprising 178 lodges, the water park, sports centre, spa, and the
main village area, opened in summer 2008.
4: Principles of sustainability are central to the Bluestone ethos, and are evident in every
aspect of the design and operating plan: from heating the waterpark and sports centre
with biomass crops grown by local farmers; to employing a strict environmental
management system, to enhancing wildlife habitats via an extensive planting scheme.
5: In April 2009, Bluestone became the first, and so far only, holiday village in Wales to
be awarded ‘five-star’ status by Visit Wales.
6. Bluestone has been supported by the Welsh Assembly Government through the
Regional Selective Assistance grants scheme.
