Knights Modern Seamanship

Assisted by: Frank E. Bassett

This Sixteenth Edition takes Knights Modern Seamanship to its75th year. Fifteen
editions have carried this work through two world wars and into the nuclear age.
There is no need to describe all the changes that have occurred since 1901. This
new edition has been prepared by a large team of specialists under the direction of
Commander Frank E. Bassett, U.S. Navy.

Accordingly, this edition has been prepared to be of special use to the mariner
who has space for only one book on seamanship on his shelf or in his sea bag; to
the intermittent yachtsman who has time to read only one book and thereafter to
use it as a pre sailing refresher; and to the naval and merchant marine students
who need a readable and explanatory text as well as a handy reference book for
their academy, college, or reserve training programs. What is important for this
book is the fact that much of the rapidly changing knowledge that the mariner
needs today, and tomorrow, is being provided by books and journals in every major
language.

During the past decade alone dozens of periodicals about the sea, ships, boats,
and various naval or merchant marine matters have come into existence. So much
is happening nuclear power, hydrofoils, hovercraft, supertankers, containerization,
and the application of electronics and automation that no one book can cover
everything. . For these and other uses the 16 th Edition of Knights Modern
Seamanship has been designed to provide both a general overview of modern
seamanship and practical guide for those who are actually going on or under the
sea in a large ship or small craft.

For three quarters of a century, through fifteen previous editions and many
printings, this classic book has been an essential guide for all those who follow the
sea as profession, for sport, or for relaxation. Yachtsman merchant seaman and
members of the Armed Forces have depended on it for authoritative answers to
their question about ships, boats, and the sea which to provide both a general
overview of modern seamanship and practical who are actually going on or under
the sea in a large ship or small craft.
