QARisastrategythattargetsthequestionWhereistheanswer?byhavingtheclassroomteacher
andeventuallythestudentscreatequestionsthattintoafourlevelthinkingguide.Thelevelof
questionsrequiresstudentstouseexplicitandimplicitinformationinthetext:
F irst level: RightThere! answers. Answers that are directly answered in the text. For
example,usingthestoryofCinderella,aRightTherequestionmightbeHowmany
stepsistersdidCinderellahave?
Secondlevel:ThinkandSearch.Thisrequiresputtingtogetherinformationfromthe
textandmakinganinference.Again,withtheCinderellastory,asecondlevelquestion
mightbeHowdidthefairygodmotherhelpCinderella?orWhattasksdidCinderella
havetodoathome?
Thirdlevel:YouandtheAuthor.Theanswermightbefoundinthestudentsbackground
knowledge,butwouldnotmakesenseunlessthestudenthadreadthetext,e.g.,Howdid
theauthormakethecharactersinthestorybelievable?Howisthemaincharacterlikeor
unlikeanyoneyouknoworhavereadabout?
Fourthlevel:OnYourOwn.Posesaquestionforwhichtheanswermustcomefromthe
studentsownbackgroundknowledge,e.g.,Whatdoyouthinkwouldhavehappenedif
theprincehadbrokentheglassslipper?

PROCEDURE(beginbyexplainingandmodeling):
1. T he teacher makes up a series of QAR questions related to the materials to known to the
studentsandaseriesofQARquestionsrelatedtothenextreadingassignment.
2. TheteacherintroducesQARandexplainsthattherearetwokindsofinformationinabook:
explicitandimplicit.
3. Theteacherexplainsthelevelsofquestionsandwheretheanswersarefoundandgivesexamples
thatareappropriatefortheagelevelandthecontent.AstorylikeCinderellathatisknownby
moststudentsusuallyworkswellasanexample,eveninhighschoolclasses.
4. TheteacherthenassignsareadingandtheQARquestionshe/shehasdevelopedforthereading.
Studentsread,answertheQARquestionsanddiscusstheiranswers.
5. The teacher and students discuss how they can use this strategy on their own and how it
facilitatesunderstandingandcriticalthinking.
6. AfterusingtheQARstrategyseveraltimes,thestudentscanbegintomakeuptheirownQAR
questionsandinsmallgroupssharewiththeirclassmates.
7. Theteacherclosesthisactivitywithadiscussionofhowstudentscanusethisstrategyintheir
ownreadingandlearning.

The ultimate goalofthisactivity (andmost of theactivities presentedhere) is for students to


becomeveryprocientinusingtheactivityandeventuallyusetheactivityautomaticallytohelp
themselvescomprehendtext.
