Task 2 2 Construct a Micro Lesson Plan

Learning Area: Design and Technologies

Topic: Magnetic forces creating movement.
Australian Curriculum Content Description: Forces can control movement, sound or light in a
product or system (ACTDEK020)

Purpose: What and Why?

We will create simple magnetic motors to help explain how magnetic fields can attract or repel and
how these invisible forces can create movement in a seemingly immobile object.

Learning Objectives:
On completion of this lesson, students will:
See that electric currents create magnetic fields and how magnetic fields interact
Discuss conduction, and magnetic attraction/repulsion

Resources (per group):

1 x D Cell Battery
1 small neodymium magnet
40cm of copper wire (electrical wire)
scissors

Method:

Introduction:
Split classroom into groups of 2-3

Give a quick introduction of magnets and magnetic fields. Revision on earths magnetic field.

Working of groups of we explain that we are going to make a simple electric motor using magnets

Sequence of learning experiences:

Identify the individual parts used to make the motor

Teacher demonstration. Remove Insulation, make loop, bend frame to sit on the top of battery,
connect magnet and remove excess wire

Practical by the students to make their own motor. Teacher to move through class assisting with
bends and any cutting if required

Assessment:
Practical assessment if students have completed the motor and the frame is spinning

Have students reverse the battery cell or magnet and explain the results

Lesson conclusion:
Discuss the forces at play. Discuss how electric current creates a magnetic field and how this created
field reacts with the natural magnetic field of the magnet. Reiterate the concept of magnetic attraction.
