Michelin versus Dunlop

tyres on Ejets.

MICHELIN Vs DUNLOP OMF 2009

1 - INTRODUCTION
Since beginning of Ejets operation (end of 2006), Rgional was experiencing high removal
rate on Dunlop tyres. So we decided first to perform a try out on one A/C of our fleet and if
positive results to extend it to the whole fleet.

2 - COMPARISON
The technology used is not the same :

DUNLOP : BIAS
MICHELIN : RADIAL

Impact on the tyre weight :

DUNLOP MICHELIN

Nose Wheel tyre Main wheel tyre Nose Wheel tyre Main wheel tyre

12.5 kg 72 kg 11.4 kg 58 kg

So currently we save 56 kg per A/C fitted with 4 main wheels with Michelin tyres (+ 1kg if we
also had a nose wheel in Michelin).

3 - TRY OUT
Rgional decided to set up a try out to evaluate the potential benefits of this modification :

We equipped an E190 as follows :

NW
Michelin
Left MW Right MW
Dunlop Michelin

Results :
Michelins main wheel tyres were removed at around 800 cycles
Dunlops main wheel tyres were removed at around 370 cycles
Michelins nose wheel tyres were removed at around 300 cycles
Dunlops nose wheel tyres are removed at an average of 150 cycles.

4 INSTALLATION ON THE WHOLE FLEET

Considering the very good results during the try out period, we equipped the whole fleet with
Michelins tyres on main gears only (because nose wheel interchangeable between E170 and
E190 and Michelin not certified on E170 yet).

Results in operation :
01/10/08 TO 17/04/09 01/10/07 TO 17/04/08

NB OF REMOVAL FOR FOD 9 13
TOTAL NB OF REMOVAL 22 49
MIN WEAR CY 811 155
MAX WEAR CY 932 570
AVERAGE WEAR CY 871 336
WEAR REMOVAL RATE / 1000 CY 1.92 7.11
FOD REMOVAL RATE / 1000 CY 1.33 2.57
TOTAL REMOVAL RATE / 1000 CY 3.25 9.68

5 ECONOMICAL ANALYSIS
We gathered the following information to help calculating the potential benefits :

RELIABILITY : 3 times better for Michelin

Consequences : less interruptions, less transport fees, less shop charges, less spares (tyres
& wheels).

WEIGHT : 14 kg less per main tyre for Michelin

Consequence : fuel conservation : for each Kg saved the gain is 3% of the Kg fuel price per
flight.
Ex : 10 A/C performing 2000FC a year (10A/C*2000Fc*3%*56kg*0.8/kg) => 26800 saved
per year

RETREAD : level 2 on Dunlop and soon level 1 on Michelin

Remark : We dont have much R2 Dunlop tyres because the rate of rejection is high .
In average, with one R2 Dunlop, we can performe 1200 cycles and with a R1 Michelin we
can expect at least 1500 cycles. One retread of Michelin is slightly less expensive than 2
retread of Dunlop.

6 NEXT STEPS and CONCLUSIONS

We will soon be delivered our first retreaded Michelins tyres.

With a removal ratio of around 3 between Michelin and Dunlop, the next step will consist in
installing Michelins tyres on the whole Ejets fleet once certified on E170 : we are still waiting.

By now we are fully satisfied of our investment and we hope this will help other operators to
save money, time and efforts.
