Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency the artifact represents.

The artifact helps identify and demonstrate the benefits of advocacy with school and
community stakeholders. It also touches the benefits of using personal reflection,
consultation, and supervision to promote professional growth and development. The
artifact also illustrates the ethical nature of working in a multicultural society.

What do they demonstrate to you about your overall progress toward the competencies
which fall under this standard?

My interest in embracing diversity to promote an inclusive and healthy learning

environment is essential to cultivate cultural competencies. The artifact required me to
explore other cultural backgrounds different from my own, which allowed me to gain a
better understanding of those cultures current belief systems and cultural values. By
interviewing diverse individuals, I gained insight to understand their unique cultural
background and current stereotypes surrounding their identity. The assignment also
demonstrated my ability to interact with diverse groups to enhance my cultural
competence.

What do these items of evidence tell you about your progress toward your personal goals
and/or your growth as a professional school counselor?

As a school counselor, I will always strive to be culturally competent. My goal of being

able to grasp culturally relevant information from my students viewport is essential to
my success as a school counselor and my ability to promote positive change. The artifact
presented helped me understand the importance of being exposed to other cultures and
perspectives so I could more effectively help with, and become actively aware of, cultural
differences, stereotypes, and other cultural issues while gaining an appreciation of our
increasingly multicultural society. It also taught me that participating in cultural events
outside my own will help me to be able to respond and adapt to the needs of students that
comes from different backgrounds.

What are your plans for additional growth to improvement in this area?

I plan to continue to grow in this area by continuing to participate in multicultural events

that will help me better understand different lifestyles. In addition, I will continue to
collaborate with diverse groups of people to further help me gain understanding and
respect for other cultures. Personally, I will continue to learn about myself to recognize
my personal stereotypes and values so I can prevent those for being imposed on others.
Lastly, I will strive to become further informed of cultural issues and problems in our
society by actively reading academic publications and creditable news outlets.
