This is a reminder of what the 8th grade policy and expectations are for students
in order to participate and be a part of the 8th grade activities, graduation and
promotion to High School.

At the end of this meeting, we want all students to understand the importance of
their commitment to ALL their classes, the school policies and promotion criteria.

Parents will be asked to monitor their childs grades via the CPS Parent Portal.

8th Grade Trips/Activities
Criteria for Participating in the 8th Grade Trips/Activities:

No more than 10 unexcused absences.


No more than 10 tardies.
Suspensions: One total suspension day-the student will not be allowed to participate in the
next scheduled extracurricular activity or trip; two cumulative suspension days- will result in no
8th grade Field Trip; three or more cumulative suspension days- students will not be allowed to
participate in the graduation ceremony or any of the 8th grade extra-curricular activities.

Must pass Reading and Math with a C or higher-NO Ds or Fs


Show growth on NWEA
Good Conduct
Have completed all the requirements from the CPS Promotion Policy
Diverse Learners & English Language Learners

CPS Promotion Criteria for Diverse Learners

Diverse Learners receiving special education and related services under an Individualized Education Program (IEP)
are expected to meet the same promotion criteria as their same age, same grade, non-disabled peers unless the
IEP modifies the promotion criteria in whole or in part (this includes English Learners with an IEP).

CPS Promotion Criteria for English Learners

English Learners (ELs) will complete their general academic curriculum in their native language and/or English. ELs
in the benchmark grades shall be promoted to the next grade at the end of the academic year if they receive final
report card grades of C or above in reading and math. An ELs DWA scores shall not be used for purposes
of promotion. ELs who fail to meet the academic performance criteria noted above will be promoted to the next
grade only upon satisfactory completion of summer school.
Graduation Ceremony
Criteria needed to graduate on stage:

successfully follow ALL the school policies


are in good academic standing
NO Ds or Fs in ANY Content or Subject at the end of the school year
have completed all the requirements from the CPS Promotion Policy
Whats the difference?
The graduation ceremony is a privilege that is given to students who have not had
any disciplinary actions, successfully follow all the school policies, are in good
academic standing at the end of the school year and have completed all the
requirements from the CPS Promotion Policy. If your child is not allowed to
participate in the ceremony, they will receive their diploma at a later day and time
Upcoming dates and events

8th Grade Graduation pictures: Thursday, April 20th

T-shirt monies due date: Feb. 6, 2017 (cost: Between $8.50 to $20.00). We are
still working out the cost of the shirts.

8th Grade Field Trip: May 26 , 2017 to Milwaukee, WI. The cost is $135.00 and a
letter was sent to parents back in November to make payments directly to
Brightspark student travel service. The last payment has to be made by March 20
of this year.
