Common Core Standards Questions

1. In Grade 6-12, the Standards are divided into 2 sections. What are the 2 sections and why are
they broken into 2 sections? (Intro p.4)
-The two sections that the Standards of grades 6-12 are divided into is one for english/
language arts (ELA), and the other section is for history/social studies, science,
and technical subjects. These are divided into two sections because they place a great
deal of emphasis on literacy skills and reading informational text. They believe
that it is a necessity for students to be able to be college and career ready.

2. Why is there greater attention on: 1) reading informational text and 2) writing to persuade
and to explain in the Common Core ELA Standards? (Intro p. 5)
-There is a main focus on reading informational text because a large amount of
informational text is being read in many other classes than ELA. In order for
students to be successful in future academic endeavors, they will have needed to
practiced and mastered this. More attention is focused on writing to persuade and to
explain because a students college and career demands it.
-NAPEs assessment results stated that they scored lower in these areas so common core
is trying to focus on those two areas to strengthen. As teachers, we should be
equipping students to be able to read and comprehend academic and informational
texts.

3. What should we expect to see in college and career ready students in Reading, Writing,
Speaking and Listening, and Language? (Intro p. 7)
-In college and career ready students, we should expect to see independently critical
thinking, wide rang of subject content knowledge, are adaptive in their
communication, able to comprehend as well as critique, uses supportive evidence,
uses technology in an appropriate and useful way, and are open and accepting of other
cultures and backgrounds.

4. What are the 4 Key Features of the Standards? (Intro p. 8)


-Reading: Text complexity and the growth of comprehension.
-Writing: Text types, responding to reading, and research.
-Speaking and Listening: Flexible communication and collaboration
-Language: Conventions, effective use and vocabulary.

10. What is the difference between Literature and Informational Text? Give 1 example of
literature and 1 example of informational text for your grade level. Pp. 31-32
-The difference between literature and informational text is that literature includes stories,
dramas and poetry whereas informational text is nonfiction, historical, scientific and
technical. An example of literature is Charlottes Web by E. B. White. Because
Charlottes Web is a fiction story about talking animals that includes
adventure, and fantasy, this is considered literature. An example of an
informational text would be Hurricanes: Earths Mightiest Storms by Patricia Lauber
because this is a nonfiction book about science.
