Vocabulary Lesson Plan


Objective: Students will be able to identify the action word within a sentence.
TEKS Standard: First Grade 6-A: Identify words that name actions (verbs).
Materials: People Work by Sara Fischer; The Verb Song; Word list: run, jump, sit, cut, walk,
sun, people, day, cat
-Tier 2 vocabulary words for guided practice: walk, come, washing, cuts, bakes, cleans
-Tier 2 vocabulary words for independent practice: work, drive, paints, makes, sells
Anticipatory Set: On the document camera, show The Verb Song. To the tune of The Ants
Go Marching, the teacher sings the song one time doing the movement for any verb sung. The
teacher leads the class in singing the song and doing the movements one more time.
Teaching:
Input: Today we will learn how to pick out action words in our reading.
Teacher Modeling: Read page 2 from the bookPeople Work. Demonstrate how to pick
out the action words go, walk, see, and work.
Am I doing something if I go? Yes, if I were to go that means I am doing
something.
Am I doing something if I walk? Well, yes. I am doing something if I were to
walk.
What about see? Am I doing something if I see? Yes, I am doing something if I
were to see.
Work? Am I doing something if I were to work? Yes, because I would be doing
something.
Guided Practice/monitoring: With a partner, students will read the rest of People Work. While
reading, students will fill out a web focused on their tier 2 vocabulary words that go along with
the word work.
Closure: Which of these words are action words? sitdaydogplay
Independent Practice: In pairs, students will complete a Concept Sort using the headers
Action & No Action. Students will do a concept sort; they will read the words on the card & sort
into categories action or no action. The words to sort are:
-Action: work, drive, paints, makes, sells
-No Action: hair, walls, bus, food
Formative Assessment: Cloze passage. Fill in the missing words (from the text, People Work).
