Volant Casing Running Tool (CRTi) Procedure - Pipe Handling System
Volant Casing Running Tool (CRTi) Procedure - Pipe Handling System
Event Description
Inspect and Ready Inspect Volant CRTi:
Tool 1. Packer Cup for undue wear or leak path.
2. Dies for debris/ice/wax or other build up.
3. Hex head bolts for adequate torque. CAUTION: Watch for pinch points!
4. Ensure adequate air pressure (70-110psi).
5. Follow winter guidelines when necessary.
6. Dope packer cup.
Rigging In 1. Stab Casing Running Tool (CRTi) into first joint to be run and set by inserting a bar
into the bump ring and rotate the tool joint clockwise using a chain tong if viewed
from the top of the CRTi.
NOTE: After dies are set, ensure tool is properly engaged to pipe and cannot fall out
while being hoisted over head.
2. Grip pipe containing CRT in pipe handler.
3. Present CRT tool joint box to top drive quill ensuring thread axis alignment.
4. Engage tool joint and make up to proper torque value for connection as listed below.
***Visually confirm that tool joint threads have fully made up to top drive
connection***
5. Alternative to using first joint is to hoist tool up to rig floor using crown winch, set
tool in stump or grip CRTi tool joint with iron roughneck and make-up quill
connection.
***Do not grip Upper Cam Housing, Cage, or Float Cushion if so equipped***
Pick Up Casing Joint 1. Top drive positioned to receive casing joint.
2. Pipe arm grips pipe and presents box end near top drive quill axis.
Stab Tool 1. Move top drive and pipe together to stab CRT into joint.
2. Apply enough weight to enable initial reaction torque between CRT and joint.
Set Tool 1. Rotate to the right until at least 1,000 ft/lbs is reached through pipe handler.
NOTE: Bump ring should not move relative to pipe
Maximum rotation permitted:

Running Guidelines
1. Ensure die teeth are free from foreign material that could impair engagement with the casing.
2. Do not attempt to run casing with internal coatings or liners without Volant engineering approval.
3. Ensure casing pressure has been released before disengaging CRTi. Stay clear when tool is removed
from casing after pumping.
4. Note that casing seal leakage in extremely cold conditions can result in mud freezing behind jaws
resulting in difficulty fully disengaging CRTi:
a. Avoid this condition by bleeding down ALL pressure prior to disengaging CRTi particularly
where misalignment is severe.
b. Circulate or steam to resolve.
5. Always maintain right hand / clockwise torque while running into the hole.
6. Always release right hand torque gradually to avoid inertia-generated left hand torque that may
partially release tool. (Full disengagement requires left hand tool rotation AND axial compression of
tool)
7. Keep hands or loose clothing away from rotating tool/casing.

8. Do not rotate clockwise when tool is not fully inserted into the casing. CRT may fire resulting in rapid
closure of pinch points and tool damage.
9. Check air pressure if tool becomes difficult to set/operate during job.
10.When temperature is below -10C, steam tool before and throughout casing run to keep seals warm
and functioning and to avoid packer cup damage.
11.Be aware that packer cup friction and/or side load may be sufficient to pick up a single joint. Dope
the packer cup and/or utilize iron roughneck to hold pipe in slips until sufficient string weight is
developed (usually 2-3 full length joints).
12.Confirm all hangers, pup joints and marker joints are of the same size/weight as CRTi setup.
