To whom it may concern,

I had the pleasure of teaching Algebra 2 to David Keith for six months between March and September of

2016. Here at Gonzalo Garza Independence High School, students work at their own pace to complete

their coursework. David impressed me by finishing a very rigorous and lengthy 2nd semester of Algebra

2 in less time than it takes most students. In addition, he did this largely through self-teaching. In fact, I

would say David is among the most mathematically capable students I have encountered at Garza HS.

David is also unusually independent and reflective for his age. He stays cool when under pressure,

maintains a healthy perspective of his place in the world, and has a balanced attitude about the

meaning of success. Regarding the latter, it brings to mind my favorite conversation with David.

Because he is quite intelligent but did not strive to achieve high grades, I told David that I imagine other

adults had told him in the past that he possessed much unfulfilled potential. He said he heard that

often. Then we talked about the hidden meaning behind "potential" in that phrase. "Unfulfilled

potential" implies a person could - and should! - work more, perhaps to achieve more academically,

profeSSionally, or financially. On the other hand, we agreed that plenty of people work too hard,

dedicating too much time to achievement and wealth while years pass by missing out on relaxation,

enjoying the company of friends and family, or the pursuit of enjoyable pastimes. In the latter regard,

David definitely fulfills his potential.

I hope David continues to pursue a healthy balance between his academic, career and financial

potential, and his ability to chill. Please feel free to contact me under any circumstances.
