successfully prepare and give a speech. Through practical experience and examination of relevant
content, the course improves the skills of a speaker while developing an understanding of the
public speaking experience.

COURSES CREATED
Introduction to Digital Media Production in this course students learn to use marketing
software including InDesign, Photoshop, and PremierePro, giving them the skills to create
marketing and branding tools for your business. From this course, students are able to design and
produce media tools in both online and print versions. Video tutorials of the three types of
software assists students in learning material to then create advertising media for their company.
This course is taught completely online for the university. I created this entire course for the
online university and taught it as well.

Advanced Digital Media Production - in Advanced Digital Media Production, students take
theirs skills to the next level, learning advanced InDesign, Photoshop and PremierePro software.
From that, students produce marketing materials specific to their business in both print and
online versions. Finally, students work to find and create the best type of marketing plan for their
specific business. This course is taught completely online for the university. I created this entire
course for the online university and taught it as well.

COURSES TAUGHT
MCOM 145 Media Literacy & Ethics - online course where students investigate the principles of
communication, analyzing and evaluating messages from print to video to the Internet. Students
learn that media literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as
essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a society. Students review
ethics cases in media and discuss them online to see how media can play a role in the decision of
ethics; students also view a variety of media (newspaper, film, advertising, internet) and discuss
the ethical cases of each area in a paper for the course.

MCOM 155 Information Gathering - online course designed to develop and enhance strategies
for gathering information ethically, legally, and eectively from a variety of sources including
libraries, databases, the Internet, institutions, polls/surveys, and people. This course particularly
emphasizes the use of the web as an information-gathering tool. Students complete projects,
exams and quizzes where they employ critical thinking skills to evaluate, select, synthesize,
organize, edit, and present information eectively. Students also learn a variety of math skills for
journalists in this course.

MCOM 161 Fundamentals of Desktop Publishing - in this online course students learn the basic
principles, techniques and technology of electronic layout and production with the use of
InDesign software. Topics include InDesign basics, elements and principles; typography; using
InDesign tools; creating with color; using master pages and character and paragraph styles; and
the printing process. Students will learn to use the most current InDesign software available then
create a variety of projects in the software including black/white flyer, spot newspaper
advertisement, color flyer and poster, and final project of resume with cover letter and updated
projects from the course.

MCOM 220 Introduction to Digital Media - in this online and face-to-face course, students will
learn how the use of digital media aects print publications, advertising and marketing, music
and sports, education, illegal Internet usage and how these areas have been aected by the use
Internet. Students learn the fundamentals of design, image preparation and video creation for the
course and create a variety of projects focusing on one business for each project. The use of
InDesign and video editing software is used to create projects including a business logo, business
card, newspaper advertisement, postcard, 10 second video commercial, 30 second video
commercial and final project of a facebook video and popup ad.

MCOM 225 Introduction to Digital Production - previously this course was MCOM 161 Intro to
Desktop Publishing and was updated to include more digital production, with fewer print
materials. In this online course students learn the basic principles, techniques and technology of
electronic layout and production with the use of InDesign software. Students learn to use current
version of InDesign software and current design techniques, where they then create projects
including black/white flyer, color magazine advertisement, mobile advertisement, facebook ad
and color poster. I created this online course for the department in its entirety as MCOM 161 and
then also updated the course to MCOM 225.
MCOM 311 News Editing - in this face-to-face course students are presented with information
regarding news editing as it applies to newspapers. Students are taught about writing, editing and
designing in the field of newspapers and magazines, as well as other responsibilities of being an
editor. Students will work at a mock newspaper and create material as if they were actually an
editor, learning deadlines, resource and fact checking, and working as a team.

MCOM 339 Publication Design - for this online course, students learn a variety of design
principles and techniques, as well as the study of the technology of electronic layout and
production with the use of Photoshop. Students learn about design and aspects of being a
designer, as well as how to use the most current version of Photoshop software. From this
students create projects including event invitation, business leaflet, promotional poster, event
sign, magazine advertising package and final project of a business marketing project to promote a
specific business. I created this online course for the department in its entirety.

MCOM 359 Advanced Digital Production - previously this course was named Desktop
Publishing Projects, but was changed to Advanced Digital Production to include more digital
projects and become the advanced course to MCOM 225 Intro to Digital Production. In this
online course, students learn advanced design principles and techniques, as well as the study of
the technology of electronic layout and production with the use of InDesign software. Students
then create advanced projects using InDesign software including large poster, direct mail piece,
tri-fold brochure, website design and direct mail package. I created this online course for the
department in its entirety.

MCOM 490 Senior Seminar - in this face-to-face course, students learn concepts and themes in
Journalism and Mass Communication, connect with professionals in their field, and are
introduced to ideas and information not previously covered in coursework. The class completes a
core project of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department Annual Report with my
assistance.

MCOM 494 Internship - students complete their internship during the summer between their
junior and senior year, working 400 hours for 2 credits. I advise the students before, during and
after this process. I usually have around 50 students each summer to assist.

MCOM 693 Online Adviser Workshop - in this online course, high school newspaper and
yearbook advisers learn a variety of elements for both new and experienced instructors including
meeting deadlines, recruiting students, photography, editing, design, writing, working as team,
completing a publication and more. I created this online course for the department in its entirety.
