Reading is an activity that many people enjoy. Novels and short

stories make us imagine, think, reflect, and they sometimes leave us a
lesson. Books are different in the way of structure or intention, so then
they present us different kinds of topics/themes to think, talk or discuss
about. In this case, this essay will deal with how hope, society and
friendship are presented in the novels 12 years a slave and The Great
Gatsby; about their similarities and differences in not the same context.
I am going to talk about 12 years a slave first. Considering hope, it
was an important aspect of the story since Solomon never lost hope to
recover his freedom. Despite the cruelty, as well as unexpected kindness,
Solomon struggled not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity and
recover his freedom. As regards society, Solomon lived in Saratoga
Springs, a State without slavery, where he lived as a free man. At that
time, slavery was recently abolished and not all the states were in favour
of the new laws which protected the afro-American people. If we talk
about friendship, it is important to mention the relationship between
Samuel Bass and Solomon since, despite the fact that they were not
close friends, Samuel promised Solomon to help him to recover his
freedom and Samuel fulfilled the promise.
On the other hand, in The Great Gatsby hope was represented by
the green light; it symbolized the hope Mr. Gatsby had in order to regain
Daisys love. Considering society, in this case, the novel took place in
1920s when people used to try to live the American Dream; for instance,
Nick Carraway moved to New York, West Egg, in order to achieve his
dream of having a better life. As regards friendship, in this novel it was
an important theme because, despite the fact that Mr. Gatsby was
always around of many people, Nick was the only person who was
Gatsbys real friend since Nick stayed with him till Gatsbys last days.
Therefore, we could see the three themes reflected in both novels
but in different ways, taking into account the setting, historical context,
lifestyle and situation; how the characters dealt with these topics
differently. Although 12 years of slave and The Great Gatsby tell us
different stories, both could be similar in the way they present and share
the same themes.
