Size
The building has a total square footage of 2,266 sq. ft. which is
acceptable for meeting space requirements for the project. The space
for main exhibits requires at least 650 square feet so the area with the
largest square footage available would be most beneficial. Many spaces
can be divided by partition to accommodate more than one need but
large enough to be user friendly. Locations for the meeting room should
be located in the second largest space and be spacious enough to
accommodate seating and equipment as well as have an folding
partition. Auxiliary rooms with multiple functions should be carefully
chosen to provide access to employees and shipping and receiving. The
need to properly meet desirable and required parameters will depend on
the need and use of the space and the amount of square footage
available; keeping in mind the users needs as well. In planning the
space it will necessary to also have spaces such as the points of egress
and restrooms accommodating to patrons and that do not interfere with
the exhibit or take away from quality and appearance.
Circulation Patterns
Flow of traffic should be from the main entry and reception
areas to the main exhibit room and meeting rooms.
Secondary traffic should flow to offices but would not need to
be located in areas that are undesirable or that would
interfere with accessibility spaces of importance. Placement
of each space should be so that the traffic follows this
pattern, avoiding inconsistencies.
Planning Features or Focal Points
Focal points in the space would be consistent with areas that
contain exhibits. There are fixed and sliding windows in the
main exhibit area that have the potential to enhance exhibits
and create focal points with proper placement.
Interior Zoning
Window placement should be as to enhance the space rather
than take away from the space or be overwhelming in
addition to other interior lighting. With consideration to the
direction of sunlight at various times of the day will also
determine placement. Relocation of sliding windows may is
an option. A more central position of the south fixed and
sliding window may balance the amount of light entering the
space. The north facing windows are in a centralized
balanced location and may not require adjustment.
Fort Bragg Airborne and Special Operations Museum

The Fort Bragg Airborne and Special Operations Museum is located in the downtown
area of Fayetteville, NC. Its designer is the Mayer Building Company in collaboration
with The Art Department, YKM Consulting and Lighting and Electrical Associates, Inc.
The museum is 5,673 square feet in size. The museum is not set up in the traditional
way of a straight progression. It provides a unique experience by allowing the visitor to
follow multiple pathways. It is a self-guided museum. As you move through the building
the displays are positioned directly forward and progress to the left and right of the
museum. Each pathway leads to a display with a significant piece of Fort Braggs 82nd
Airborne Division history. There are 13 sections in total. The casings are displayed in
an arc fashion with a corner positioned entry way into the building. The building has a
beautiful glass atrium towering above the entry, which sits directly between two angled
walls. The historical Iron Mike statue sits centered on the building as you approach the
museum. The interior atrium displays tall white columns that seem to mold into the
atrium ceiling. A paratrooper and parachute statue is displayed in the center of the
atrium. The airborne paratrooper is a large part of Fort Braggs military community and
greatly respected. The space was specifically designed for the military community but
does allow visitation by civilian patrons as well. The museum has an open floor plan.
There are not many areas that are enclosed by a wall. Several arc shaped displays sit
in front of the historical displays that are also in an arc shaped design. People use the
space for viewing of the museum primarily. The museum also has places to gift shop,
conference rooms and theater for a visual historical experience as well.

Functional Efficiencies
Creating adjacent offices for the curator and assistant by
adding a permanent partition would make the selected
location more functional and meet the requirement for
accessibility to main areas. Pipe chases are located in
several locations that may be able to accommodate
placement of restroom facilities. North eastern wall sections
may have potential for such placement.
Positives and Negatives Of The
Space
A few advantages and disadvantages I noted are the centrally
located entry way and reception area providing an ease of traffic
flow and accessibility to other parts of building. The south fixed
window is located further left next to a sliding window but
creates an unbalanced appearance. Exposed pipes are located
in the potential meeting and office areas and would have to
hidden in some fashion. The location of the entry/exit in a
potential office space is undesirable and may require relocation.
There is no exit or entry along the east wall which could be an
egress issue. The over all size of the building has ample space
to meet requirements of the client. Design of the building
enables spaces that require certain placement the ability to be
located in the required area. There are enough windows to
provide ample natural light.

Project Statement

Client is a large urban university with a reputation in social sciences and esteemed faculty involvement in
popular culture futurism. Client has acquired a 2,500 sq. foot space for a Popular Culture Institute that
will potentially become an international network of similar institutions by exchange of traveling exhibits
and programs. Client will use location to host seminars and conferences using many formats and media,
requiring maximum exhibit space flexibility.

Location is an empty shell without any interior partitions and has fixed and sliding windows on the north,
west and south walls. The entrance is located on the south wall. Space will include a reception/ entry,
main exhibit area, meeting room, curator office, administrative assistant office, workroom, serving kitchen
and restrooms. The curator and administrative assistant offices must be in close proximity. Curators
office and meeting room will require acoustic privacy. Natural lighting and views requested for each
interior space. Main exhibit area must be 650 sq. feet. Meeting room must seat 45 people auditorium
style and have two remote means of egress. Entire facility should be barrier free. Location also has
exposed pipes in two locations. A designer has been retained to complete space planning and make the
finish and FF&E selections.

After gathering all of the required measurements and comparing them to
the areas I chose to measure, I found mostly good designs. Within my
bedroom, there arent many areas that would have my body use poor
ergonomics. All of the heights within the room are at a height that don not
require excessive reaching or bending. In the area of the pediatrician
office (which I visited for the kids flu shots) was mostly also ergonomically
friendly. Good design areas I would identify would be the heights of the
bedroom furniture were designed at a height that accommodated my
body size and measurements. The clearances for walking were adequate
which was something I was sure to do once I moved my furniture. The
walking space in both locations as well as the chair height in the
pediatrician office was more than adequate and/or ergonomically made
and fit my knee to floor measurements making sitting comfortable. This
makes these areas comfortable to use. A few areas that were poorly
designed would be the height of my bed. With the mattress the bed is 32
inches tall. This is more than half my height, making it difficult to get into.
The height of my drafting table is too low and can be adjusted but at the
present moment is low. This makes it very ergonomically unfriendly
causing me to look down excessively putting strain on my neck, back and
shoulders. This leads to muscle pain. Another area would be my
entertainment chest. The height is 40 inches, also more than half my
height. With the addition of the TV height it makes the top of the TV hard
to access for cleaning, etc. These poor designs make it difficult and at
times annoying to use, especially getting in and out of bed.
Gestalt Theory & Sensory

Gestalt Theory

The Gestalt Theory or principles refer to the theories of visual perception, which was
developed by German psychologists in 1920. It describes how people organize and
group color elements, also called unified wholes. ( The Gestalt)
The theories include five principles: similarity, continuation, closure, proximity, and
figure/ground.
Similarity explains when objects look like one another, so people perceive them to be
a group or pattern. An object can also become dissimilar to other object by looking
different. ( the Gestalt)
Continuation explains how an the eye moves forward through one object to continue
on to another. ( the gestalt)
Closure is when an object is in complete or a space is not completely enclosed. (the
gestalt)
Proximity explains when elements are placed close together. People tend to see
them as a group. (the gestalt)
Form& ground is when the eye differentiates an object from everything around it so
the shape is shape is seen as the form and the surrounding area the background.(the
gestalt)
Analysis

An example of closure, this picture shows parts of the panda in


black while the white areas that arent enclosed make the viewer
perceive them to be. This could be used textiles and designing
used to decorate a space by arranging them in a manner so
that they appear to be design. It would bring a unique and
sophisticated look to the space so the occupants would feel
accomplished and modernized.

An example of similarity, it shows several similar shapes that


appear to be a unit, so are perceived as a group though it has
several different objects involved. This could be used a series of
windows designed and placed to appear as one but represent a unit.
This could give a feeling of harmony and overall well being as the
natural light shines through the window.
Sensory Response
Phenomenon where people feel a tingling, static-like sensation that
radiates across the scalp and back of the neck and also to other areas
triggering audio and visual stimuli. The sensation may also be
accompanied by a feeling of overall wellbeing and relaxation.
Examples:
It can brought on by videos or images that would describe feelings of
calmness and comfort such as massage or viewing items that would be a
calming trigger for the individual experiencing the sensation.

This could be used in several aspects of design and created by the


addition of architectural elements like waterfalls and sky light windows.
Also in interior designing in the home dcor , textiles, and pieces chosen
for that space, bringing a sense of calming, relaxation and
harmoniousness to the client.
