1. Background:
Drones is a flying robot, meaning a plane without a pilot. Drones can be
controlled from the ground either by computers, or remote control. However,
the drones have a history where ancients tried to run a plane without the
pilot. However, the history of drones was peaceful, and the goal for building
the drone to automate everything around. On the other hand, in America CIA
was using the drone in Afghanistan to survey looking for enemies as the
(thenation.com) says in its website. However, the CIA was running the drones
to help them to predict the unexpected attacks. Moreover, after the
September 11 attacks; CIA started to use armed drones in 2004. Whatever
was the reason, but we can say the long decade of the drone began.

Nowadays, the concept of drones has been change. Industries started to

produce more drones with less material and less prices, which makes it
affordable to consumers. Moreover, the first appear for drones to people was
used by photographers and movies makers. Furthermore, people started to be
obsessed with this technology.
Drones become a target for most of companies around the world. Amazon is
starting to build its service using drones to deliver the items to the customers
address within 30 minutes or less. The service is called Prime Air service.
However, a lot of questions were raised about this service to Amzon.com, and
Amazon addressed that one day: seeing drones on the air will be as normal as
seeing mail trucks on the road

2. Project goal:
Drones project is the most recent technology around the world. Therefore,
everyone want to have it; but regarding the price and the high maintenance
for this technology, a lot of people will still hold until the price drops down.
However, all companies or enterprises agreed on same goals for having this
new technology, the following points will cover some of goal projects for this
drone.

Cost reduction:

One of important goal for having the drones is cost reduction. Amazon.com is
planning to roll the drone in its company to allow the drone to deliver the
packages to the receivers, with this technology Amazon will reduce some of
its cost by this new technology. However, all companies areound the world
trying to find a way to apply this technology hoping to reduce the cost. Yuan
Gao in his article mentioned about the reducing the cost if using the drowns
by saying:

Hovering drones rely on an electrical stabilisation system,

which needs accelerometers and gyroscopes, only in the last
decade, and thanks in part to the smart-phone industry, has low
cost MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes been available,
necessary for the stabilisation and AHRS system in drones. I
remember only 5 years ago, a good MEMS gyro/accelerometer
system would cost over $100, a decade ago it may have cost
thousands, today we're talking less than $5. (Gao, 2015)

The write explains how the drones would lower the cost even if the company
would pay a little higher on the batter for the drones.

Monitoring:
Another goal for this project is to monitor huge area using this new
technology. Drones are apple to capture very huge space by putting a small
camel on the bottom of the drones. Therefore, you can easily monitor and
watch your farm, or even your workers if you take if from this perspective. On
the other hand, drones can increase the security of a property.

Figure 1 monitoring

As we see the above picture, a farmer using the drone to cover the whole area
for his farm, and watching the farm while he is setting on his house rather
than driving the area by his car.

3. Project finding:
Drones can be found for so much benefits. Not only on the individual level, it
is now go to the country level. Nowadays, some countries are adaption this
technology and involve it to it tools to be used. However, in this section will
cover the benefits and the project finding of this technology Drones.
Therefore, we are going to cover the project finding on the following points:

Drones in the marketplace:

Drones now are in the marketplace, and it is taking a decent market share
since it is grapping the consumers attention. This new marketplace create
new opportunities for business and for job seekers. Since the first presentation
for the drones, people seeking to have one of these drones, whatever the
reason if bad or good; but the demands are pumping very fast.
Figure 2 Drones in the marketplace

As we see above the picture, the goal market for the drones is moving up very
fast. However, we will see a huge move in 10 years from now, and the global
will get around $140 billion from adapting this new technology. However, no
one can predict the use of this technology since we have a new way of using
the drones in a short notice. Put in mind, this change will impact the economic
around $13.6. Economically, if the adaptation of this technology goes how it
supposed to be, the world will gain a big number impacting the economic
globally. The author, David in his article the future of commercial drones
said:

Within the next five years, drones could become widely used to
help transport goods. But rapid advancement and keen industry
interest aside, the realities of regulation and technological
constraints will limit the role of drones in delivering goods to
customers in the United States, at least in the short term
(Allouche, 2015)

The author, explained how the drones could be a god supporter to the
economy. However, the author did not mention about the risk of this
technology, which will covered later in this paper.

4. Importance of your Emerging Technology:

The new technology of drones shows a lot of importance things. Moreover, it
changes the ways of life. Starting from our daily basis to the business dealing
with its operations. Drones importance is raising up every day since the
technology is found. However, after searching the most importance uses for
this new technology, I could list them on the following points:

Work Tirelessly:

If you ever had a chance to use the drone, you never get tired or board from
using this technology. Moreover, tremendous number of people admit that this
technology can be used to search and rescue. Lets imagine if we have a
flooding crisis and a lot of people are missing. Drones can be the best solution
to search the area in less time with less effort than the human search.

Drones insides the research field:

Drones can be used in places where human cannot reach it easily, or need
more tools to be touched. Scientist are deciding to user drones on the
agricultural field to climb up the tress. However, the drones can go further to
the top of tress and let the agriculture scientist to study the top of tress rather
than take a risk for monitoring the top of tress every while.

Drones your safeguard:

As I mentioned earlier in this paper, drones can be a good monitor in your

farm. A lot of farmers who has huge space of their farms need expensive
equipment to monitor and do the job for watching the entire farm area.
Therefore, farmers can use drones to watch the farms or even to do some jobs
such as farm irrigation, below is an example of that:

Figure 3 Drones your safeguard

Evermore, you could use it as a safeguard for your farm and this is the most
valuable function of this new technology Drones. Farmers might stop paying
pile of money for workers to protect the farm from thefts.

Drones is business a tool:

Drones now is getting to be a business tool. Companies want to invest in this

technology to benefit from this technology by reducing the cost and make the
business process. For instance, business investing in drones to make it the
fastest deliver of their product such as Amazon.com.

5. The Features of Drones:

Drones technology used for different purpose, and it have different features,
so before taking about its feature lets have look at the different classification
of drones:

Classification based on usage:

1- Military drones: providing attack capability which use for high-risk missions
in wars

2- Trick drones: which use for fun and entitlements.

3- Logistics (delivery): drones that designed for cargo and logistics operation
(e.g. amazon prime air)

4- Civil and commercial drones: specifically designed for civil and commercial
applications (e.g. Photography drones)

5- Aid drones: Which Used for Humanitarian Purposes.

Classification based on size of drones:

1. Very Small Drones: Very small drones are basically drones which are of sizes
ranging from that of larger insects to about 50cm long. Very small drones can
be usually found in two forms: Nano or Micro Drones and Mini drones .its
usually have very small rotary or flapping wings.

2. Small Drones: which is from 50cm to 2m. Most of the small size drones have
fixed wings, these drones usually have to be thrown into the air by hand to fly.
Some examples of these small drones are: The RQ7 Shadow used by the US
Army, and the Turkish Bayraktar.

3. Medium Drones: These are the drones that are quite bigger and heavier
than the small ones, having an average wingspan of 5-10m and powerful
enough to carry weights of up to 200kgs.

For example UK Watchkeeper and Israeli-US Hunter.

4. Large Drones: These drones are basically of the size of small aircrafts. They
are mostly found in military facilities. The main use of these drones is in the
field of combat, also it can be used for surveillance purposes.

Classification based on range:

Very Close Range Drones: These drones are mainly used as toys. They
have ranges of about 5km. Their batteries provide them with a fly time of
around 20-45 minutes.

Close Range Drones: These drones are mainly used by the military in
conducting surveillance missions. Because of its very high range that can
reach to 50km and high power battery, which giving them a flight time of 1-6
hours.

Short Range Drones: Their range extends to 150km, which is 100km more
than the close range drones. They have a flight time of 8-12hours.

Mid-Range Drones: They are high speed drones, its range of 650km. which
make it perfect to use for surveillance purposes, and in the collection of
meteorological data. With its large range and high fly time.

Endurance Drones: These are the best types of drones possible. It can fly up
to 36hours and have the ability to reach to a height of 30,000ft above sea
level. Its often used for high end surveillance

And the general features of drones, which is can be controlled remotely or by

Automation Software and Artificial Intelligence (allow drones to fly and
operate autonomously.) it has GPS system, and of course built in camera or
space to put cell phone or camera.

6. Organizations affected by your Emerging Technologies

Amazon Prime Air:

Amazon announce that they will use small unmanned aerial vehicles (drones)
in their future delivery system, they said it will deliver packages to customers
in 30 minutes or less in safely manner, this service will enhance the
services they already provide it to their customers by providing rapid parcel
delivery that will also increase the overall safety and efficiency of the
transportation system.

They said: Putting Prime Air into service will take some time, but we will
deploy when we have the regulatory support needed to realize our vision.

Figure 4 Google Project Wing

Google Project Wing:

Google[x] lab announce a new delivery system

that uses drones which could actually deliver
products, currently they conduct their research
and testing in Australia. They successfully
delivered products like a first aid kit, dog
treats, candy bars, and water to Australian
farmers. We think this project will take time considering the many legal
hurdles, as they said:

"We're only just beginning to develop the technology to make a safe delivery
system possible, but we think that there's tremendous potential to transport
goods more quickly, safely and efficiently."

Its expected to run this drone delivery service to

deliver goods to people in the U.S. in the beginning
2017.

Domino's DomiCopter:

crowded streets to reach its target within minutes
while keeps its cargo piping hot on arrival.

UAE tests unmanned drones to deliver

government services:

The UAE is conducting pilot tests to introduce

drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) for a range of
civilian government services including delivering
documents to the public and monitoring traffic.

They said fingerprint and eye-recognition security

systems would protect the drones and their cargo.

Australian firefighters to get a drone-eye view during emergencies:

New South Wales (NSW) government in Australia announce that they have
rolled out a technology package worth more than $ 2.96 million, which will
help firefighters to do their job in safe and fast manner by having access to
real-time information through drones when responding to emergencies .

The package includes two drones, two mobile command centers and more
than 180 mobile data terminals to be installed in fire trucks across NSW .The
centers with radio, video, and communication services like high-speed
satellite and 4G which will give firefighters access to weather data and local
hydrant, gas and electricity maps as they head to incidents.

Unicef Using drones to save lives in Malawi

According to unicef reports thousands of children in

Malawi suffer from HIV, and to take care of these
children they need to early diagnosis of daises. With
many Malawians living in old villages, the blood samples
from rural HIV clinics need to be transported by
motorbike along what are little more than dirt tracks
which is unsafe and slow way , so unicef in corporation

Figure 9 Unicef Using drones

with California-based company Matternet has designed a drone to make
transfer of blood samples easier and safer .

It has already been certified as safe by Malawi's defense ministry, which has
approved an air corridor for the drone's use.

But the team from the Silicon Valley will run tests to measure the drone's
resilience, cost effectiveness and efficiency before the official use.

responds to phone calls and It's equipped with
camera, Wi-Fi, and sensors that allow it to fly autonomously and determine its
location.

7. Impact Analysis:
7.1. Drones Impact on Business
Due to high costs and technical sophistication, drones in the past were only
limited to military use. However due to economies of scale, drones become
cheaper which encouraged some companies such as Amazon to explore the
use of it for commercial purposes which is still in the research and
development stages Amazon hopes to drop packages weighing less than 5lbs
at customers doors in half an hour through its Prime Air service. There are
plenty of business opportunities in many industries. Logistics firm DHL has
been working on drone deliveries long before Amazon. It has even delivered to
a pharmaceutical company based on an Island in Germany using its
parcelcopter. Many organizations are exploring the use of drones for farming
in the UK as Juniper Research estimates that agricultural sector will expcted to
have 48 percent of all commercial drones sales in 2016. drones uses also in
some of Europe's largest energy plants, and is rolling them out in oil and gas
which is hard-to-reach places (like tall towers or the underside of an offshore
oil rig) because it is safer, and more efficient, than sending people.
7.2. Technology Impact of Drones:
Drone is still a new technology, and till now it did not expand as should to be.
Therefore, we are going to cover the technology impact analysis in this
section to see the impact for export, participants:

Export: drones are designed for export people to be used for specific duties,
such as photographing. Photographers now are using the drones to document
their events everywhere the world, why? Because the drones could be fly and
capture nice view that human cannot reach it at all. Put in mind, drones can
be used by geographic or to study the weather. Drones can fly for far distance
way and read the weather or the earth by supporting the drones with some
technologies. Therefore, increasing the use of drones are impacting other
technologies to be used along with drones. National geographic is adding the
drone to their tool for every explorations, and they invest lots of money to
unlimited the use of drones. The below figure is from nationalgegraphic.com
their preparation for new adventure.

Figure 11 nationalgegraphic.com

Apps: since the drones are growing very fast in short time, technology
companies try to keep up with this change. Therefore, Apple and Galaxy
companies were developing new apps t be used in the drones. Therefore, this
new technology drones flourish all the technologies especially mobile apps.
Figure 12 Expanded compatibility

According to young-diplomats.com, the compatibility for drones companies

were raising up and create new completion between the companies to be the
best and the first adapter for drones.

7.3. Drones impact on Financial:

Since there is no official commercial use of drones its difficult to find the
global financial impact of it, but According to SAGE website there are studies
that shows the expected impact of drones in USA they said:

A trade association for the drone industry projects that direct spending in the
United States on unmanned aircraft systems will grow steadily from 2015 to
2025, as will the economic impact of the business.as following chart describe:

13Projected
Figure direct spending
14 13Projected direct and economic
spending impact of impact of
and economic
commercial drone use, in $U.S. billions, 201525

7.4. Drones Impact on Society:

Here are some expected impacts on society of using drones especially
commercial drones: Steal the delivery drones: With companies like Amazon,
google and Dominoes planning to use Drones in their delivery system, so large
amounts of goods or meals will be moving by drones. So it could be stolen
before arrive to its destination.

Increase the demand of technical people Drones have the potential to

replace large amounts of mail carrier roles, so there will be a need for more
technically skilled people to manage and maintain an efficient drone delivery
network.

Reduce the number of mail shops: With a drones ability to deliver day or
night at a time of your convenience, it will minimize the need to visit your Mail
box, so it will reduce numbers of mail shops.

Drones' fuel stations! : With the widespread use of drones, so it may

require places for drones to refuel/recharge, as well as pick up and drop off
goods.

Drone terrorism: Cyber terrorism and crime may will arise, if anyone can
purchase drone and use it for criminal or terrorism purpose.

Traffic headache: drones industry brings with it the challenge of integrating

thousands of new aircraft into the airspace. Drones are likely to share the
section of the sky below 500 feet (152 m) with helicopters, recreational
aircraft and crop dusters. But their small size makes drones hard to detect on
radar, which poses challenges for any air traffic management (ATM) system
for drones.

8. Competitive Advantages
Here are some of Advantages of using Drones:

Saves Lives: The first advantage of using drones is saves lives when its used
instead of putting military personnel in harms way or in combat ,also it will
help to saves lives when its used to deliver aid kits to poor cities , areas that
affected by earthquake, and disasters.

Low Cost: The second advantage of drones is their low cost compare with
regular airplanes, because they are significantly cheaper to purchase, fuel,
and maintenance as well as storing drones is much less as compared to
helicopters and airplanes.

Operational Hours: Without a human pilot, drones can stay in operation for
significantly longer hours of operation without fatigue.
Effective tool for geographical surveying: drones is effective way to
collect information, as well as could be useful for constructions work.

Spying: Years before drones were used in combat; drones have proven to
increase surveillance, reconnaissance, and general military intelligence.

Low Risk: Using drones are less risk than traditional airplanes since drones
are smaller and can fly lower height than airplanes.

Deployment: Finally, drones are significantly easier and faster to deploy than
most alternatives.

9. Risks versus Opportunity

Analysis:
Risks Analysis: As any of new
technology drones have some risk and
challenges to face, so here will took
about some of these risks associated
with using drones and the
opportunities that drones will offer.

Privacy issue: Widespread use of

drones is anticipated to increase
privacy concerns among citizens
because the Drones utilize a camera
and GPS navigation System which many of people believe it could be used for
intrusive purpose for data collection by companies and government
organizations.
Figure 15 Risks versus Opportunity
Civilian Losses: as we knew drones used in wars so it Analysis
could causes damages in civilian lives , people ,and property, as well as the
technical problems of drones could causes damages also such as bush fires,
collapse of buildings , and release of contaminants.

Terrorists could use drones: As drones become more easily available, the
danger to the public is growing, so the governments still wearing about drones
use regulation because it may use by Terrorists to their purposes such as
attack planes and spread propaganda or recruit.
Criminals Uses for Drones: Border guards in
USA announce they have discovered criminals
smuggling drugs and other contraband, across the
Figure 16 Terrorists
U.S. border and into prisons using the types of
drones, also Police in Tijuana, Mexico found in early
2015, a DJI drone that apparently crashed while
attempting to carry a load of drugs to the U.S.

Talking about bad use of drones we have to

mention an incident which took place during an
Albania-Serbia Euro 2016 qualifying match in
Belgrade last year, in which someone flew a drone
carrying a pro-Albania banner onto the pitch.

The incident caused fights between players, team

officials and fans, causing the match to be cancelled.
Figure 17 fights between
players

Opportunity Analysis:

Using Drones in Entertainment: University of Vienna has developed such

technology that allows people to strap themselves into a virtual reality
headset and then control a drone at a tourist site, allowing that person to
virtually visit any number of destinations. Cameras attached to the drone let
you see things from the drone's point of view, taking you on a trip you
couldn't even get if you physically went there.

Improving Farming: Surveillance drones could be used to spray pesticides

and analyze a farmer's land from above, which could give farmers valuable
information on how to improve their harvests.

Search and Rescue: Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department have been
experimenting a drone called SkySeer, which can scan areas inch-by-inch,
making it more resilient, thorough, and faster than humans. If they success in
their project , these drones will saves lives.

The value of drones in construction

In Japan, an aging population has the construction industry turning to new
technology to help build the infrastructure of the future. Leading the charge is
the multinational machinery maker Komatsu which has just announced the
launch of a new service called Smart Construction, aimed at helping fill
Japan's void of a fit young workforce with cutting edge information and
communication technologies. Drone will use in this Smart Construction
venture to conduct surveys and produce 3D models, culminating in live
interactive maps of the job sites. Also drones could be used helping to follow
and monitor construction in progress.

10. Training needs relation to emerging technology:

Drones as others emerging technologies, need training especially when the
technology is very complex or it has so many features. However, this the
drones is unmanned plane which could cause a lot of dangerous situation or
even a disaster when unskilled person control the drones. Therefore, the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) allow the drones for commercial use
under control and put the following rules to be followed before starting the
use of drones:

Figure 18 (FAA)

I. Drones flies below 500 feet.

II. Must be in the line-of-sight of the operator.
III. Flying has to be in the daylight hours.
IV. Pilot of unmanned plane has to have a certification of training or
competence.

Therefore, a lot of institutions start to offer some classes to teach people who
interested in this field. The institutions or universities are certified to teach
about drones are listed below:

1. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach, FL)

2. Oklahoma State University (Stillwater, OK)
3. Indiana State University (Terre Haute, IN)
4. Kansas State University, Salina (Salina, KS)
5. University of North Dakota (Grand Forks, ND)
6. Liberty University (Lynchburg, VA)
7. Troy University (Troy, AL)
8. Lewis University (Romeoville, IL)
9. University of Louisiana at Monroe (Monroe, LA)
10. Northwestern Michigan College (Traverse City, MI)
11. University of Nevada, Reno (Reno, NV)
12. Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro, TN)
13. Unmanned Vehicle University (Phoenix, AZ)
14. Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology (Tulsa, OK)
15. SKYOP (Canandaigua, NY) (Successful Student, 2016)

In fact, all students have to pass the FAA 333 Exemption for U.S. Commercial
Drone Pilots which will cost them around ($500-1500), and student could
spend around $8,000 to $12,000 to be prepared for the exam for commercial
drones.

11. Emerging technology over the horizon:

At the end drones is the newest technology that is taking big portion from
other technologies. Therefore, we will go over some facts about the drones
according to successfulstudent.org. However, these facts were gathered by
The UAE Drones for Good Award.
I. $8-10bn USD projected economic of
drones industry by 2025
II. 100,000+ anticipated international job
creation directly related to drone
industry.
III. 2.8lb smallest UAV (Unmanned Aerial
Vehicle).
IV. Commercial drones can transport up to
2.5kg of weight.
V. Over the next 10 years its estimated
that civil drones could make up 10%of
the aviation market.

10 industries using todays drones:

1. Packege/supply delivery
2. News
3. Rapid response & emergency services
4. Scientific researches
5. Real estate
6. Law enforcement
7. Agriculture
8. Photography/film.
9. Energy.
10. Entertain/toys.

As shown in the figure, the United States is

taking 56% of using the drones comparing to
other countries. Then, China 12% followed by
Israel 9% then, followed by other countries.
However, the drones technology will create a
wild competition between companies.
Therefore, 5 expected industries will be the
poisoner of using drones as the following:

1. Pollination
2. Personal security.
3. Medical in-body drones. Figure 19 over the
4. Asteroid prospecting and planetary horizon
science.
5. Action sports photography.
12. Recommendations to further improve of Drones:
Finally, drones are not complete technology. Meaning, it is still now and all the
researches are putting assumptions and expectations for the technology.
Therefore, we come up with some recommendations after preparing this
paper. However, we gathered the recommendations considering it to our
country Saudi Arabia, or for general use for other countries. Our
recommendations consists from the following:

I. Saudi Arabia must start to allow using drones for commercial,

entitlements, and military use, and regulate rules for using the drones.
II. Drones must have an international regulator for unified rules to be
applied for all and to prevent the collisions of helicopters with drones.
III. There should be a law to identify every drones in the air, and the
owners should be identified as well.
IV. Countries should start using drones for anti-terrorism.

Finally, we believe our recommendation above could add value to the use of
drones. In fact, the recommendations are recognizable, but no one mention it
in the research that we read. We hope this technology add more value to the
world and make peaceful to the entire world.
