Initiation is a step-by-step process of re-creation that engages the participant in a new body of knowledge that literally alters one’s state of consciousness, producing a transformed state of being. The puberty rites of passage were thus also the process of initiating the youth into the second birth from the profane to the sacred. The rites constituted a path, a road, a sacred joumey that all adults of the community had traveled before, stretching back to the beginning of the history of the community. In allowing the youth to assume their place among the adults ofthe com- ‘munity, the process of initiation created social cohesion and facilitated collee- tive rejuvenation of the community. Through initiation the ideal was revealed ‘that set the standards for social participation and personal behavior. Initia tion is a lifelong process with levels and degrees of complexity. They were responsi- ble for the health and development of the family or clan group. The social structure of African people is a direct outgrowth of the family structare, ‘where the parents were the heads of the social group. The elders were the old- cst living parents from which the rest of the group came. As the groupings of families multiplied and more complex social institutions developed, the ‘elders from different family clans joined together in sectet societies to main- tain cohesion and order. These societies of men and women provided the for- smal infrastructure that permeated the total life of the community. In those indigenous commonities that have not been significantly disrupted by West- cern culture the elders are still central to community cohesion. In keeping with their cohesive function, the elders also served as guardians of the group's wisdom. This wisdom, gleaned from thousands of seasons of living, resides in the myths, rituals, signs, symbols, and folklore of the people. The elders maintained the knowledge of the sacred history and taditions of the group. They experienced the living truth necessary for the ‘cohesion, survival, and development of the collective. ‘This knowledge, therefore, enabled the elders to be the teachers, instruc tors, and guides of the next generation. Thus, the elders were responsible for ‘conducting the initiation ceremony. For a person to be initiated there has to be 1 body of knowledge and a brotherhood or sisterhood to be initiated into. In tur, initiation was necessary in order for youth to function constructively in the community. SEPARATION ‘To be transformed into anew state of being, one must leave the old condition. ‘The separation phase removes the novice from the familiar surroundings that reinforee the old identity. For the youth it is a severance from the protection of the mother and family, indicative of childhood and dependency. REVELATION ‘The revealing of the inner meanings of the traditional signs and symbols and ‘explanation of the sacred myths, dances, masks, and ceremonies of the group ‘or community constitute the first phases of transcendental knowing. Each society has an accumulated body of knowledge, a set of traditions, a sacred history that outlines that particular people's cosmology. This cosmology fines their view of the world and their place and role in this world. RESURRECTION AND REBIRTH ‘The resurrection involves the rites and ceremonies that dramatize that the novice has been re-created, The initiate has been remade into a human, a sacred being that embodies the original knowledge and experience of the ancestors, Resurrection is the other side of the initiatory death, where the novice is torn to pieces or devoured by a monster. They can now communicate through the seeretJanguage and use the signs and symbols with their fellow initiates. ‘As a part of the adult status they are provided with land to build a home so they cin marry and provide for a family. The new initiates will now take their place as adult members of the community, participating in decisions and defending and working for the development of the collective. REINCORPORATION INTO THE COMMUNITY, ‘There is a coming-out celebration held at the end of the initiation process, where the newly created adults are welcomed back to the community. This ‘community celebration serves to commemorate the completion of the initia- tion of a new group of youth. The community celebration also serves to bind the total community back to the origins of its beginnings. Iis a remembrance for all the adults of the community that have traveled this path before. "These rites and rituals of initiation were the formal educational system that transmitted the accumulated knowledge of the group to each successive generation. These rites and rituals provided a clear demarcation at each of the major phases of life. They created @ dramatized experience that indelibly {imprinted the significance of the event on the psyche of the initiate.
