andsupportgovernmentmovesaimedattighteningrestrictionsonabortionin
Spain. Archbishop Antonio Rouco Varela led Sunday's outdoor service in
Colonsquareandsaid"thegiftoflife"shouldbeconsideredsacredandnot
tamperedwith.
4) TheconservativegovernmentofPrimeMinisterMarianoRajoyonDec.20
gave his Cabinet approval for a new abortion law that would allow
terminationsonlyinthecaseofrapeorwhenthereisaserioushealthriskto
themotherorfetus.SuchalawwouldneedtobeapprovedbyParliament,
wherethegovernmenthasalargemajority.
5) SpainonWednesdayapprovedasweepingnewlawthateasesrestrictionson
abortion, declaring the practice a woman's right and doing away with the
threat of imprisonment, in part of a drive toward liberal policies that has
angered conservatives and the Catholic Church. The new law allows the
procedurewithoutrestrictionsupto14weeksandgives16and17yearolds
therighttohaveabortionswithoutparentalconsent.Thesenate'spassageof
thebillWednesdaygivesitfinalapproval.
7) Spanishwomenhavebeenabletoobtainabortionswithoutrestrictionsuntil
the14thweekofapregnancyunderalawintroducedbySpain'sthensocialist
government.
