Review:

My 3D journey started with Cinema 4D I would follow tutorials and

experiment with simple principles and type, making intros for my friends
YouTube channels. This wasnt anything special but it was the start of
something.

I started to use a lot more

software when I entered college
creating little things like
isometric rooms and simple
structures. The isometric room
was a design of my actual room.
I measured all the objects and
used that to create everything to
scale in Cinema 4D. By the end
of my first year I had moved on
to create a small planet. In this design I implemented a daylight cycle and
the camera would spin around it looking at all the buildings designed and
placed in the village setting. As it become night all of the buildings turn
the lights on to bring a sense of life to the little world. They were basic
buildings, including small houses, medium houses and a church. I even
added a large amount of low poly trees. I was inspired to do this type of
thing by time-lapse videos, I seem to like how they work. I experienced a
lot of problems while creating my design, things like the daylight cycle
breaking because of the clouds. I fixed this problem by moving the layers
about the allow the clouds and the sky to still do what it was intended to,
although I ended up removing them because they detracted from the
design.

There have been many events that I have worked as a team. I interacted
with the previous year 2s of my course, who I didnt know, to create what
we could for a mobile game app in 2 days for an event called FXP. We
chose a style that nobody else used and that was to create the game 2.5D
using Maya and Unity game engine. Because of this style and the story
about space twins, we earned third place even though we didnt have
enough time to create a lot of the assets for the game. I created many of
those assets that we could like the background and the platforms that the
character would move on and worked in Maya which was a totally new
software for me. We were up against the programmers for this section and
worked hard to get a functioning trial.

Videos games stand out to me. They make me ask questions - how does
the world work or the assets get designed and the little details that are
added into some games are starting to make me think more about
construction. Recently, I have been noticing some of the slight problems
that some games have and some of the things that are broken. I even look
at it and sometimes understand how it could have been missed. Games
like Destiny and Halo have worlds that expand further than the playable
area. They do this so it looks as if the word is bigger than you intentionally
think. Objects that are normally outside the map are usually created in a
low detail. From far away you cant tell the difference. But somehow it all
works together. I want to build, create and make the assets or the worlds
and cant wait to start developing engine use with Unity to allow the
player to roam.

Project Concept

I started with a wide

range of ideas to
start with but
everything always
ended up with
space. So with this
in mind I took this
direction and the
breadth of choices it
creates. Many
people are amazed
with space, its
vastness and diversity. Many people are obsessed with the discovery of
new things. The National Aeronautics and Space Agency or NASA search
the skies every second of the day discovering new things all the time
(examples 7 earth planets), there is always new things to discover so
anything that could be planet probably is a planet somewhere. In all
likeliness we will never reach these planets and even if we did what would
we do when we got there? Towards the future the equipment that we use
to go to space will improve allowing us to access places that we couldnt
before. Equipment like spacesuits and spaceships will able to last for
longer in space. I looked into games like No Mans Sky. This game
involves a lot of space exploration and generates different planets giving a
good idea of how planets can be created. Going from how we treat the
world we live on it will probably be used to mine or farm resources, but
then again there may be life, aliens.

There are many different ways that aliens are shown from films and
games that an alien can become basically anything you want. In some
cases, aliens have been said to
take the form of a human. There
are many people that believe in
aliens and there are many people
that believe that they have
actually seen them as well.
Obviously anything from a
different planet or from space is
classed as an alien so how do
people know what an alien looks
like? (are we actually aliens?).
There are many games and films that have different views of how people
see aliens. For example, in the movie/game Alien they describe aliens that
can change forms can be rather aggressive giving the impression that
aliens are out to kill. Whereas something like the alien from the film Paul
is friendly. Unlike Alien, Pauls shape is of a human and he cannot
change.

The idea is to make a game that requires you to move from planet to
planet collecting items and resources. As you proceed you will encounter
different discoveries, enemies and come across different types of planets.
I plan to create each planet differently and each planet type will have
multiple version of it. This will make every planet unique. The same thing
will be done with the enemies.

Evaluation

I will evaluate my work by uploading online to a blog and through sheets. I will get
peer assessed by both, people that are working in the area I am and people that are
not so that I can get a wide range of improvements. A step by step process will be
created of each 3D model and I can get people to help me how I could improve my
process. I will also include any problems that I come across and how I overcome
them.
