July 5th – July 11th on Twitter @THEHCC

In the general news, much of the country saw record temperatures in the triple
digits. The BP oil gusher was significantly reduced and plans to completely stop the leak
are underway.
In healthcare, President Obama appointed during the July 4th recess Dr. Donald
Berwick to head CMS, bypassing congressional hearings. The move could signify that
real cuts to Medicare are on the way (see Miami Summit stories inside).
In other healthcare business, JNJ announced yet another recall for the Tylenol,
further damaging the brand. The FDA criminal investigation into how JNJ handled this is
underway. Also, Genzyme expanded its manufacturing deal with Hospira in the wake of
its own manufacturing problems.
There was little FDA or clinical data news. The advisory committee briefing
documents for the Avandia hearing were more critical of Avandia. Some FDA medical
officers wrote that GSK improperly failed to account for adverse events in the RECORD
trial. Lastly, XenoPort and GlaxoSmithKline announced that their migraine headache
drug candidate failed in a Phase 2.

Video: Medical imaging expenditure growth

July 6, 2010

Bruce Hillman, MD, Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of the American College of

Radiology (JACR) discusses why medical imaging expenditures have skyrocketed and
suggests some solutions to the problem. With Federal and State budgets on the brink,
even pro-spending economist Paul Krugman is saying today that Medicare is one budget
item that could be cut. Medical imaging is a vulnerable target within the Medicare
budget. Realizing this, and wanting to control their own fate, the radiology community is
starting to discuss ways to cut the rate of growth in medical imaging.

About The Healthcare Channel

The Healthcare Channel (The HCC) is the first digital video channel dedicated to
professionals in healthcare such as policymakers in Washington, journalists, healthcare
executives, scientists, doctors, and institutional investors.

The HCC is a video portal for all forms of business and research information including
interviews, coverage of medical meetings, panels of experts, etc.

Our viewers already have news services such as Bloomberg and Reuters, so we focus on
forward-looking analysis. We try to find underappreciated topics that will matter the most
to clinical medicine and the healthcare industry. Our content is brief and high-yield.

The HCC is not a boutique research shop, broker dealer, or banking outfit. Our business
model is subscription based content, advertising, and syndication. Our content can be
viewed on NPR, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, ABC News and other national
platforms.

Our unique position allows us more freedom from bias than the current sources of
investing news and analysis. We have no investment banking or sell side research biases.
We have no hidden stock theses or investment agendas. We may have simultaneously
playing different stories that are both positive and negative to the same company.

Our video style is intentionally not flashy, in keeping with the “white paper” topics
discussed. The web site is design to be as clean and simple as possible.
