Exam memo

You (the student) will be examined on the following areas though the list is
not meant to be exhaustive (You are more likely to be examined on other

!
areas as well ). The purpose of the examination is to determine whether you
understood what you have been taught during the semester. Some formulas
will be given on the exam paper.

Computation of the mean and drawing a histogram for grouped data

(refer to the introduction ppt slides)

Plotting the scatter diagram and developing the regression line (refer
to the regression analysis the ppt slides)

Problems with the normal distribution (see chapter 5 in the textbook)

Problems with hypothesis testing concerning one mean (refer to

chapter 7 in the textbook)

True or false questions coming from some chapters, specifically the

following chapters: introduction to the subject (the ppt slides),
regression analysis, probability and the normal distribution.

Practice Problems
A)
1) The following table gives the marks of 58 students in Statistics. Calculate the
arithmetic mean and construct a histogram
2)
X 2 4 5 8
Y 3 5 6 7

(a) Plot the data on a graph.

(b) Develop a regression model that could be used to predict the value of Y based on the
value of x.
(c) Forecast the value of Y when x = 15.

3) On a statistics examination the mean was 83 and the standard deviation was 10.
Determine the marks of two students whose standard scores were 0.86 and 1.0
respectively.
4) If a normal distribution has a mean of 200 and a standard deviation of 10, 68% of the
population falls within what range of values?

B)
Exercises from the textbook
