the foundations for a successful education, to enable each child to
discover the joy of learning, to help them to ful l every aspect of their
potential and to encourage their growth into eective citizens, ready
to play their part in the world and their community. We have made a
commitment to ensuring our children are con dent, well-educated
and prepared for the future.

We work hard to ensure that every child is successful in the key

areas of English and Maths and we are keen to see this recognised
in the results they secure. However, we also want them to learn and
experience more than this through a varied curriculum and a range of

Prepared for the Future
Horizon
Cu r r i c u l u m
Comprising The Course

The Horizon curriculum was written by school leaders and aims

to develops a wide range of skills that supports the children
to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world;
preparing them for the future.

Aims: The Horizon Curriculum seeks to promote curiosity,

investigation and exploration. It provides young people with the
opportunity to acquire skills that are transferable and relevant to
their lives, in order to broaden their horizons in the years ahead. By
fostering the courage to ask questions, the creativity to experiment,
the aspiration to focus and persevere and the kindness to share and
collaborate, the Horizon Curriculum embeds Phoenixs core values
into young peoples day-to-day learning experience.

Structure: The structure of the curriculum uses foundation subjects

as a vehicle for reading and writing. It is a skills based curriculum
that focuses on developing historians, geographers, scientists,
theologists and culturalists and uses this to develop skills in reading
and writing through a cross curricular approach.

Through the Horizon curriculum, the following National Curriculum

subjects are enriched and covered through the whole school theme:
English (including reading and writing), history, geography, science,
RE, citizenship, art and design and design and technology.

Some subjects are taught independent of the Horizon curriculum as

standalone lessons where when appropriate, links are made to the
Horizon whole school theme. These are maths, computing, music,
languages, PE, yoga & mindfulness.

Our PPA model, where our teachers have time out of class, is based
on the premise that children at Phoenix have access to specialist
teachers. Currently at Phoenix, children have access to a specialist
Art/DT teacher, music teacher, sports coach and language teacher
once a week.

Improving & Enhancing

At Phoenix St Peter Academy we value enrichment activities and are

committed to providing after school opportunities for our children
to mix with existing friends in a new environment, strengthen their
con dence and independence and learn skills which will help them
to build resilience. We also believe that creativity supports good
academic progress.

We oer a rich and exciting curriculum and regularly plan themed

weeks and days to enable children to be immerse themselves in
learning new skills and gaining new experiences. We provide trips,
visits and workshops for every class during each unit they are
learning about in order to ensure all our children have a broad range
of experiences as they grow.

My daughter has become so much more con dent since trying lots
of new activities after school (parent with children in nursery and
year 4)

Many of our children represent the school at sporting events such as

football, hockey and horse-riding meaning they develop social skills,
tness and pride in their achievements.
This school is good for learning lots of different things like maths and literacy but
they also give you different opportunities like boxing, computers and music
and the teachers are the best, they are so cool and really want to help you

Phys
Physical Education Premium

At Phoenix we believe it is vital to provide a high quality physical

education curriculum to ensure that each child stays active. We
recognise that children are continuously developing physically and
emotionally and so are especially aected by the bene ts of sport.

In PE our children learn the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle, new

physical skills and important social skills through group and team
activities.

We also believe that children develop con dence in sports which they
can transfer to support their academic success.

Every class has 2 hours of PE each week delivered by a specialist

sports teacher. The curriculum covers a broad range of sports and all
children have the opportunity to compete in local tournaments.

What We Can Oer

Over 80 per cent of our children attend extended day activities and
we oer a wide range. We survey children each term and tailor the
activities to their feedback. Activities include a variety of sports,
yoga, art, music, dance, fencing, sewing and many more.

We are committed to providing enrichment opportunities for our

children before and after school. We have found that these activities
help them in the following areas:

Being creative and developing problem-solving skills

Stress release
Developing con dence and self esteem
Opportunities to socialize
Relaxation

As well as running after school clubs, we host a youth club for older
children to socialise on Friday evenings.

The after school activities give my children the opportunity to take part in
activities which they would not otherwise be able to take part in.

Inspir
Teachers
Teaching at Phoenix St Peters Academy

At Phoenix we believe that teachers can, and do, change lives. We

recognize that the relationship between the teacher and the children
is crucial to how we inspire and motivate children. All great teachers
are passionate and our team of teachers share a commitment to
providing great learning experiences.

Inspirational teachers always set high standards and our teachers are
uncompromising in their ambitions and aspirations for our children.
For this reason we invest heavily in training for our teachers. A good
example of this is the Visible Learning programmer we have recently
embarked on as a team.

We recognize that children come to our school with diverse

experiences and expectations and so need to be approached
dierently. Our teachers therefore adapt and tailor learning so that all
children make progress from their personal starting point.

We are proud that all our teachers have passion, commitment,

knowledge and a variety of skills. Developing our champion
teachers is at the core of our mission and driven by our desire to
give our children the best possible start in life.
