MATERIAL SCIENCE

Material Science involves investigating the relationships that exist between the structures and properties of materials.
Material engineering is on the basis of these structure, property correlations, designing or engineering the structure of a
material to produce a predestined set of properties.
Four components of the discipline of material science and engineering

Processing Structure Property Performance

Structure usually relates to the arrangement of its internal components.

Property is a material trait in terms of the kind and magnitude of response to the specified imposed stimulus.
Properties of materials:
Mechanical deformation to an applied load or force
Electrical such as electrical conductivity
Thermal in terms of heat capacities and thermal conductivity
Optical electromagnetic or light radiation
Magnetic response of a material to the application of magnetic field
Deteriorative chemical reactivity of a material
Classification of a materials
Metals composed of metallic element
Ceramics compounds between metallic and nonmetallic
Polymers rubber and plastics
Composites materials which come from metals, ceramics, and polymers
Advanced materials
Semi-conductors have electrical properties that are intermediate between the electrical conductors and
insulation
Bio-materials components implanted into the human body for replacement of diseased or damaged body parts
Materials of the future
Smart materials are group of new and state-of-the-art materials now being develop that will be a significant
influence in many of our technologies
