a. According to the article, what are 2 definitions of culture? One definition of culture would be
referring to an appreciation of good literature, music, art, and food. Another definition would be for
biologists is likely to be a colony of bacteria or other microorganisms growing in a nutrient medium in
a laboratory Petri dish.

b. What are the 3 layers of culture? The body of cultural traditions that distinguish your specific
society. Subculture is the second layer. Cultural Universals is the third layer.

c. What is a subculture? It is a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or
interests at variance with those of the larger culture.

d. List the cultural universals. 1. Communicating with a verbal language consisting of a limited
set of sounds and grammatical rules for constructing sentences
2. using age and gender to classify people (e.g., teenager, senior citizen, woman, man)
3. classifying people based on marriage and descent relationships and having kinship terms to refer to
them (e.g., wife, mother, uncle, cousin)

e. What is the difference between culture and society? While cultures are complexes of learned
behavior patterns and perceptions, societies are groups of interacting organisms.

3. Define the term stereotype. Stereotype is an oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of
person or thing.

a. What are some different categories of stereotypes? Sex, race, age, sexual orientation, religion
and physical ability are various categories which exist in stereotyping.

b. What is one of the stereotypes youve heard of that is listed in the 1992 gender study?
Males were typically characterized as adventurous, powerful, domineering and independent.
c. Why is mass media considered significant to stereotyping? It determines the content of our
culture and a strong influence in supporting and tearing down stereotypical characteristics.
d. Why are stereotypes functional? As audience members we are bombarded with much more
information than we can process. Our tendency is to reduce complexity to simplicity. We trade-off for
simplification, which can lead to inaccuracy and we are often unaware of this deduction.

e. What is the most influential factor in stereotyping? Why? Prejudice, and because our
perceptions are highly subjective, and many people subscribe to derogatory descriptions of ethnic
groups. Unfortunately the selectivity of a person's perception result in people seeing what they expect
to see when they come in contact with members of an ethnic group they view with prejudice.

5. Define family dynamics. Family dynamics are the patterns of relating, or interactions, between
family members. Each family system and its dynamics are unique, although there are some common
patterns.

6. According to this definition, what are your family dynamics? I consider the three people I live with,
mom, dad, and brother, my family and we interact very well with each other. The rest of my family as
far as cousins, grandparents, and so on are just people I am related to and share blood with because
for one we live very far away from each other, and two we dont talk at all, sometimes for holidays.
