Procedure for sand replacement

A) In the lab

1. The pouring cylinder was filled so that the level of the sand in cylinder is about
15mm from top .
2. The pouring cylinder with sand was weighed and the mass recorded.
3. The pouring cylinder with sand was placed on the calibrating container.
4. The shutter was opened and the sand was allowed to run out.
5. The shutter was closed when there is no movement and the pouring cylinder was
gently removed.
6. The pouring cylinder with the remaining sand was weighed and the mass was
recorded.
7. The sand cone on the calibrating container was collected and it mass recorded.

B) In-situ

1. The pouring cylinder was filled so that the level of the sand in cylinder is about
15mm from top .
2. The pouring cylinder with sand was weighed and the mass recorded.
3. The metal tray was lay down on the level surface without an loose extraneous
material.
4. A hole was excavated according to calibrating container dimension.
5. The excavated soil was collected and the mass recorded.
6. The representative excavated soil was put into the oven to determine its moisture
content.
7. The metal tray was removed and the pouring cylinder with sand was placed on the
excavated hole.
8. The shutter was open and the sand was allowed to run out.
9. The shutter was closed when there is no movement and the pouring cylinder was
gently removed.
10. The pouring cylinder with the remaining sand was weighed and the mass was
recorded.
