EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Furniture Cleaning Agent is a chemical product that can be used to remove
stain, dirt, microorganism, and fungi especially for outdoor furniture.
Environment plays a big factor because outdoor furniture is usually exposed and
can be easily damaged by undesirable biological and chemical substances. The
goal is to make the furniture more durable and clean.
The existing problem of outdoor furniture cleaning agent is consisted of the
performance, safety, mechanism of the product itself. From the performance point
of view, some outdoor furniture cleaning agent has poor performance, which is
cannot cover the entire furniture (low scattered power), low drying time (less
durability), and blobs (inappropriate viscosity). From the safety point of view,
Furniture cleaning agent nowadays are containing hard chemical and high VOC
which can affect our health especially respiration, vision, and skin also not to
mention can damage the environment as well. From the mechanism of the
product, some outdoor furniture cleaning agent is not efficient because it can
easily spill, moreover its not portable.
This report shows the process of finding one product concept that conquer
all the problems mentioned. In the first chapter of this report, we collect
information about existing products, including the form, the mechanism, and its
functions. Then we brainstorm to generate ideas of new product with better
functions. The combination of both is about 19 ideas.
The next chapter shows the process of narrowing the ideas until one concept
is chosen. After the combinations are generated, we do screening step which
eliminate all ideas and concepts that are not feasible. After that, we do some
scoring and rank system to determine which is the best concept for the product.
Here, we determine the chosen concept is in the form of aerosol and wiping
mechanism. Then, in order to finalize this concept, we do concept testing by
giving questionnaires to respondents about how interested they are with our
product concept. The respondents are not only consumers, but people with
knowledge of outdoor furniture cleaning agent.
The third chapter provides product description, positioning, and
specification of the chosen concept. Product description and specification contains

brief explanation of the concept. And then, product positioning mainly focused on
how our concept compared with competitor products. Here, we explain added-
values of our concept that is not available in another existing product.

CHAPTER 1
CREATING CONCEPT
1.1. Background

Most outdoor furniture is
used for aesthetic, recreation, and relaxation purposes. The methods that can be
used to apply the cleaning agent nowadays are spraying, wiping, and brushing.
To create new concepts of our outdoor furniture cleaning agent, we have to
collaborate the knowledge and specification data that we got from the assignment
1. Weve decided that the input and output of the outdoor furniture cleaning agent
that we make must be the opposite of the undesirables effects that have been
mentioned above. It must has less-toxic materials, appropriate properties
(viscosity & density), affordable price, and environmentally friendly. From the
specification above, the best concept can be found by eliminating the unnecessary
concepts and combining them with new ideas.
New ideas can be create by listing the methods in existing product. We
start brainstorming to find brand new ideas. After brainstorming, the new ideas are
combined with the concepts. After the combination, then we did a screening step

which eliminate all ideas and concepts that are not feasible. After that we
will do scoring and rank system to determine which is the best concept for the
product. And to finalize the concept, we do the concept testing by giving
questionnaires to respondents of furniture cleaning agent which consist not only
consumer, but people with a knowledge of outdoor furniture cleaning agent.

1.2. Splitting Problem

In determination of our chemical product for outdoor furniture, there are a
few steps that wehave to do to get the best concept. The first step is split the
problem into sub problems and analyze sub-functions. Here are the few problems
that appear fromour topic that will be developed further, chemical product for
outdoor furniture.
What materials are used for outdoor furniture?
What is the problem that usually occur on outdoor furniture?
What is the substances are going to remove from the outdoor furniture?
How to protect the outdoor furniture from something that affect damage on
furniture?
How to make outdoor furniture be comfortable for owner?
How to keep the furniture stay clean and beautiful?
How to solve the problem that occur on outdoor furniture?
What is the most suitable method to prevent the problem that will occur on
outdoor furniture?
What is the most suitable method to solve the problem that occur on outdoor

furniture?
What the problem that occur on user or owner of outdoor furniture when
they use the existing chemical product for outdoor furniture?

1.3. Existing Concept

Outdoor furniture cleaning agents that widely sold in market are made in
liquid form. The liquid itself have different raw materials, manufacturing process,
and mechanism but do have one goal, to clean and protect the outdoor furniture
from undesirable environment conditions. The choice of the method will depend
on many factors such as cost, mechanism, form, availability, and practicality. Here
is the mind map of existing concept of outdoor furniture cleaning agents;

71.1. Concept Generation

72. In this chapter, we find and write down any possible

concept to make a good performance furniture outdoor cleaner, also we
describe how the existing concept work as well as present technique used
by commercial furniture cleaner. The list consists of possible concept that
adapted to make an effective cleaner. Thus, what we should improve is the
product goal as well as formulation so we can meet the consumer needs
that has been wrapped up in previous section.

73. All of the existing product has already been benchmarked

with our product in case of specification, now in this chapter, we do
benchmarking our product concept with another existing similar product to
make sure we understand the concept used in present time as well as the
process used. After we gather all the idea of concept from brainstorming
session, references, literature as well as another source, we got them
scored to pick the best score of possible product concept. Next, three
concept with best score will taken to next stage for examination and
merged-up ideas.

278.1. Concept Screening

279. After concept generation is completed, therefore we need to do

screening in some concept based on the parameters that used to distill all of
concept. Screening aims to filter concept ideas smore closely with the
consideration of certain criteria. In the concept screening, concept idea we have
can also be improved from the existing concepts. Before the concept screening,
we must prepare the metrics of concept idea selection.

279.1.1. Prepare the Selection Matrix

280. Metric of concept idea selection consists of concept ideas column
and selection criteria. These concepts were being benchmarked with the reference
concept which had been prepared before. The reference concept is usually the
most existing concept found in market and known widely. It acted as comparison
towards other concepts. The concept reference is a liquid form furniture cleaner
that work with brushing mechanism. To generate the concept screening matrix,
selection parameters were chosen from specification needs in rank of needs. This
selection is used as a metric measure of whether a concept can be forwarded to the
production stage or not. The following parameters were used for screening the
concept:
1. Easy to clean
281. The ease in cleaning the furniture from stain and other
microorganisms can be measured by how the stain is removed by the polish

Universitas Indonesia
30

product. There are several mechanisms how to applied some form of our
product concept to the furniture itself such as wiping, brushing, scrapping, etc.
All of those mechanism has its own easy to clean level, that can be known
from this screening methods.
2. Manufacture Cost
282. The level of ease in making the product determines how many cost
needed in manufacturing it. The easier and cheaper product, the better is the
product.
3. Durability
283. Durability of the product is one of the important aspects. It is one
of the main concern for customer to buy furniture polish, because the furniture
can be doped by stain anytime.
4. Easy to manufacture
284. The term easy to manufacture related to provide the material that is
feasible to be used as raw material for the products that we make. Easy of
manufacture is also related to complexity of the process and the composition
of the material. This determines whether the product is easily made or not.
5. Easy to use
285. This criterion related to the devices shape that can affect
customers comfort when using the furniture polish. We want a furniture
polish that is comfortable to hold and easy to use when it is used. A good
design of remover is flexible.

285.1.1. Rate the Concept

286. Concept rating is given based on comparison towards the reference
concept. These are rating marked on the matrix:
287. + : Concept idea is better than reference concept
288. - : Concept idea is worse than reference concept
289. 0 : Concept idea is equal than reference concept
290. These ratings (relative) represent how every concept compared to the
relative concept from certain criteria. The concept that is used as the
reference in this stage is concept number 5 (liquid by brushing). This

Universitas Indonesia
31

concept is choosen as the reference because it is the most common concept

of furniture polish that is available in the market.

290.1.1. Rank the Concept

291. The next step is determining the ranking concept by accumulation
points earned from each concept based on the selection parameters that exist.
These ranking refer to the net score obtained where its score is sum rating given.
The sum is done for rated (worse) and rated + (better).

291.1.1. Combine and RevisingConcept Idea

292. Consideration of imparting rating and ranking should be completed
to observe its coherence and compatibility to be combined or improved. The
concept idea able to be combined one to other, as an example the concepts is the
concepts with same score or the better one with the worst one. These ideas are
combined to reselect in scoring stage. Besides, the concept can be revised or
improved by adding modification so it is considered to be scored in scoring
process.

292.1.1. Picking One or More Concept Idea

293. Consideration of imparting rating and ranking should be completed
to observe its coherence and compatibility to be combined or improved. The
concept idea able to be combined one to another, as an example is the concepts
with same score or the better one with the worse one. These ideas are combined to
reselect in scoring stage. Besides, the concept can be revised or improved by
adding modifications so it is considered to be scored in scoring process

293.1.1. Review Selected Concept Idea and Its Process

294. After four previous stages were done, we must review the result
and the process of concept selection in the concept screening stages. Comparison
between the product concepts with reference or the others concept of products
have to be done carefully. It is completed in order to take the best concept idea.
Form the sages of concept screening, a matrix for concept screening is made.
These concept are proceeded to the next stage.

317.1. Concept Selection

318. After doing concept screening, the next step we must do is concept
selection. Concept selection is a process of selecting ideas that pass through
concept screening and this selected idea will then be developed as our product.
The concepts that pass through concept screening, and this selected idea will then
be developed as our product. The concepts that pass through concept screening are
concept number 1,4,5, 7 and 8. The 1 stconcept is an aerosol form that has function
to remove stain, fungi, and other microorganism that use by wiping, scrapping, or
both, it to furniture surface. It will form a film layer when the solvent already
evaporates on the surface. The 4th concept isliquid in spray form that has function
to remove stain, fungi, and other microorganism that use by spraying then wiping
it to furniture surface. Its liquid characteristic will create a film layer that can
protect furniture surface from outdoor disruption. The 5thconcept is a gel cleaner
that has function to remove stain, fungi, and other microorganism that use by
spray and wiping it to furniture surface, the 7th is a cleaner in the form of a tissue
sheet which can be used to wipe stain from outdoor furniture, and 8thconcept is
feather duster, with addition of chemical cleaning agent substances that used by
wiping it smoothly to remove stain on furniture surface.
319. In concept selection, these ideas will be valued based on several criteria.
Each criterion will have a different weight based on their importance related
to a furnitures cleaner specification and performance. This selection of
concept consist of several steps, which is preparing matrix for selection,
giving rate for the concepts, giving rank for the concepts, combining and
fixing the concepts and choosing one or more concepts.

319.1.1. Preparing Metrics for the Selection of the Concept Idea

320. Matrix for concept selection consists of scoring criteria, weight, concepts,
and concepts rate. There are nine criteria in our concept selection that is
dissolving, roughness, durable, easy to manufacture, availability of raw
material, ergonomic, manufacture cost, design and safety that allow to reach
sidelines easily. These are the weights for each criterion and the reason for
weighing this criterion:
321.

Universitas Indonesia
35

322.
Dissolving (20%) :
323. We put dissolving this score because it is the most
important criteria in furniture cleaning agent. Dissolving shows how well a
stain, fungi from the outdoor furniture.

Durable (20%) :
324. We give durability this score because furniture polish, that is
durable, is one of the importance criteria. The consumer tend to search for
the effective cleanser with durable protection from any stains,
microorganisms, fungi, etc.
Easy to manufacture (10%) :
325. We give easy
manufacturing this score because the ease of manufacture will create
abundance of product thus increasing availability of the outdoor furniture
polish on the market.
Availability of raw material (5%) :
326. We give such small
score to availability of raw material not because it is not important, but it is
not the main focus. But rare raw material will retard the manufacturing and
commercialization of the product.
Ergonomic (20%) :
327. We give this criteria this score because the customer must
feel comfortable when handling the stain remover. A good product will give
comfort to its customer.
Manufacture Cost (10%) :
328. Cheap manufacturing
cost will result in cheap product, thus making the product affordable.
Design (5%) :
329. We put design in the
least weight because furniture cleaner design that can accommodate the

Universitas Indonesia
36

easiness in reaching sideline is not always needed. Not all window that our
customers own have narrow sidelines.
Safety (10%) :
330. We give safety this
score because furniture cleaner must not cause safety issue and hazard on
the user especially children. The furniture cleaner must be non-toxic.
331.

331.1.1. Giving Rate for the Concept Idea

332. The rates that will be given to out concepts are:
333. -2 : Much worse than reference
334. -1 : Worse than the reference
335. 0 : Same as the reference
336. 1 : Better than the reference
337. 2 : Much better than the reference
338. Our group uses this type because we are rating our concepts based on a
reference product. We use the same reference concept as we used in concept
screening.

338.1.1. Giving Rank for the Concept Idea

339. Rank is given after we calculate total score of each concept. Total
score is calculated by multiplying rates and their weights and then accumulating it
for each concept. Concepts rank will be given based on their total score from the
biggest to the lowest, consecutively.

339.1.1. Combining and Fixing the Concept Idea

340. After scoring, our group is also look for a possibility to combine
and fix ideas to get a best selection

340.1.1. Choosing One or More Concept Idea

341. This step is done after we finish scoring and looking back for the
ideas. In this step, we choose the best concept that will be developed and tested to
the customers. The table below shows the matrix for our concepts selection:

344. For dissolving ability, we give the biggest score to all mechanism
except for dusting method. Because we think all of them has some cleaning agent
material, but in dusting method its really hard to reach all furniture surfaces. Not
like wiping and other cleaning mechanism, the usage of dusting method itself just
can clean stain roughly, without push and wipe stain, so we think dissolving
ability for this mechanism is worse and not effective as other mechanism.
345. Durability is one of important mechanism that we are considered.
Because durability give furniture ability protected for any stain and
microorganism. For durability, we think other criteria is better then the reference,
except for dusting and tissue sheet method. We give dusting and tissue sheet
method worse score than the reference because we think two of them mechanism
has weak on maintain the furniture surfaces and cant give furniture surface
longer.
346. For easily manufactured, we think the reference is easier to
manufacture than other concept because liquid is an easier way to make than any
other form like aerosol and cream which must considered to addition of propellant
and others material. For availability of material we think the reference itself is the
easiest manufacture concept than other concept in this scoring method. The liquid
materials are easily obtained than other form, because this form no need any
special addition material like others concept.
347. For ergonomic criteria, concept like spraying, tissue sheet, and
dusting are easier to use than the reference concept, so we give almost others
concept better score. Ergonomic criteria can affect for customer interest to buy our
concept idea. For design and safety, we also give almost other concept better score
than the reference as we have considered.
348. So, after this final scoring we know that concept aerosol cleaner
that has function to remove stain, fungi, and other microorganism used by wiping,
scrapping, or both it to furniture surface has the best score among all. Total score
of this concept is 1. Other concept that has total score lower than this can we
eliminated and thus the concept remain is the concept (1).

349.1. Concept Testing

350. The next step is concept testing. Concept testing is conducted to

determine how potential the product concept that we have created to be accepted
by society. This can also be the step to consider other concepts. These are the
steps to do the concept testing

350.1.1. Defining the Purpose of the Concept Testing

351. Concept testing is the one of standardized type of research. The
purpose of concept testing is to evaluate our product concept. In this step, we
made a questionnaire about our concept for our respondent, so we can get their
response. Then, it can be used to determine the respondents acceptance of our
product.

351.1.1. Choosing a Survey Population

352. Concept testing conducted to the appropriate population. Our
product has a specific target, so the respondents must reflect our target market. So,
in this case we choose expert, furniture producer, household, and college student
to be our respondents as the most potential segments to be our consumer in the
future.

352.1.1. Choosing a Survey Format

353. The survey format can be face-to-face interaction or interview, and
also via social media. The survey format that we choose in this concept testing is
both of them. The interview is done to 52 respondents from a various segment as
explained in the previous part. In this interview, we also have to explain the
concept of our product to the respondent so that they will understand about the
concept and raise the acceptance of our product.

353.1.1. Communicating the Concept

354. The product concept is offered by direct interview and undirect
interaction via social media. We give the information about our concept to the
respondents orally and textually. By this explanation, we hope that the interviewee
as potential customers fully understand what the concept is and why we create it.

354.1.1. Measuring Customer Response

355. This concept testing is attempted to measure consumers interest of
the product concept and their purchase intent. The interview is done by giving
questionnaires to 52 respondents consists of 1 expert, 5 furniture producers, 15
households, and 31 college students. We explained the form and mechanism of
our concept product on the questionnaires then asked the respondents how they
feel about it. The results are presented in the form of pie diagrams.
356. The first diagram presents the consumers opinion about how
practical our aerosol product concept is. About 65% respondents say it is practical,
31% say it is just regular, and the rest says it is unpractical.

367.
367.1.1. Interpreting the Result

368. The result of the interview stated in previous part shows that our
product concept draws a good attention from the respondents. Respondents
thought the aerosol form and wiping mechanism is relatively easy to use. It is
proven by the data that 65% respondents found this form is practical.
369. Whereas, for the price of the product, respondents opinions vary
by slight differences. 34% respondents want the price to be between Rp21.000,00
and Rp30.000,00, slightly less, 33% want it to be less than Rp20.000,00. From
this statistic data, we can draw conclusions that consumers want the product to be
relatively affordable and below Rp30.000,00. But, not a few respondents who
expect the cost to be between Rp31.000,00 and Rp50.000,00. This means some
consumers are willing to pay more for this products abilities.

Universitas Indonesia
43

370. The last, from the third diagram, we can conclude the overall result
of consumers opinion about our product concept. The data stated that more than
half of the respondents are very interested with the aerosol cleaning agent that can
remove stain, dull color, bacteria, and fungi. Therefore, this product concept has a
promising prospect and can compete with another existing cleaning agent which
has been available in the market. Then, the product concept is feasible to develop.
371.
372. CHAPTER 3
373. FINAL PRODUCT
374.
375.1. Product Description
376. After conducting concept elimination, screening, scoring and then
testing the chosen concept to the customer, we can conclude that the chosen
combining concept for chemical product for outdoor furniture is outdoor furniture
polish formed aerosol. Aerosol outdoor furniture polish that contain cleaning
agent and fragrance can clean the furniture surface chemically and supported by
mechanically.
377. The main substances are contained on aerosol outdoor furniture
polish are cleaning agent, fragrance, film former and solvent. Chemical cleaning
is provided by removing the dirt or stain with the substances in the aerosol. This
cleaning make the dirt removed easily because the bond of dirt with the furniture
surface has been cut or destroy by the substances and make a new bond between
substance and dirt. Supported by mechanically process such as wiping, dirt or
stain on the outdoor furniture surface can be removed easily. This mechanical
cleaning will be needed to make sure the outdoor furniture clean from the other
dirt too, so the outdoor furniture will look clean and could be shine. The durability
of this product will be depended on the environment, that the outdoor furniture is
placed, because this product has a volatile compound in it. But generally, this
product will have medium durable. The design of this product will be like an
aerosol so the user can reach all surface of furniture, because the use of aerosol
make the chemical substances can go to the desire surface easier. Beside of that,
aerosol outdoor furniture polish has cylindrical shape that is designed to make the

user comfortable. For manufacturing, we will common material such as

isoparaffin, dimethicone, water, octylphosphonic, synthesis fragrance, vinegar,
etc. so, finding raw material wont be a big problem. The process of
manufacturing the product is not difficult because the main process of
manufacturing the product is mixing all the chemical substances. Because the high
availability of raw material and the ease of the manufacturing process, the
manufacture cost wont be too high so the product would be affordable for our
customers.
378. Specification of our concept will be better than other existing
product, because our product is born from specification of existing product that
has weaknesses, so we add or replaced chemicals that can cover up these
weaknesses and environmentally friendly. The main advantage that separate our
product with other competitor is the availability of function that can remove
mildew and remove dull color of furniture surface.

403.1. Product Positioning

404. In order to compare our product concept to another existing
outdoor furniture polishconcept, we use conceptual mapping as the method.
conceptual mapping is achart that describe the position of our concept based on
some criteria. The criteria we used in positioning are the same
criteria as we used in concept scoringOn theconceptual mapping, we can
compare our product design to another existingproduct by seeing its position in
the map. The existing outdoor furniture polish product thatwe chose as a

474. CHAPTER 4
475. CONCLUSION
476.
477. From the explanation above, there are some points that we can conclude:

To make new concept about furniture cleaning agent product, we must list the
existing concept and new concept.
The choice of the method will depend on different factors such as easy to clean,
manufacture cost, easy to use
The choice of the method will depend on different factors such as Roughness,
Dissolving , Durable , Easy to manufacture ,Availability of raw material ,
Ergonomic, Manufacture Cost , Design (easy to reach sideline), Safety.
There are 19 concept from combination product concept. For the new
concept, we propose some technology which are better than existing product.
Our product is designed with some advantages which are can remove stain,
dull color, fungi and bacteria. And also our product is designed easy to use.
Based on the step we do before like screening the concept and scoring the
concept in order to narrow the concept to get the best one. We choose concept
aerosol by wiping as our concept product. Its because that concept has the
highest score among the other concept for most of criteria.
In concept testing, we have respondents that respond 56% they have interest
in our product concepts, 40% somewhat interested, and the rest 4% they are
not at all interested. From those results, we can conclude that our concept
product can get attention of our consumer. And about the price, consumers
want the product to be relatively affordable and below Rp30.000,00. But, not
a few respondents who expect the cost to be between Rp31.000,00 and
Rp50.000,00. This means some consumers are willing to pay more for our
products abilities.
