The candidate is a good fit for the program because they are a junior studying electrical and computer engineering at Baylor University with an interest in worldwide power systems. They are currently studying abroad in Wales and taking power systems courses there, so moving to Glasgow would not require much additional travel. The candidate enjoys solving difficult problems and is not discouraged by challenges.

I am a good fit for this program because I am a junior in the Electrical & Computer Engineering program at Baylor University, have an interest in world-wide power systems and how they interact, and am currently taking power systems in the United Kingdom. I am currently studying abroad at Swansea University in Wales, and would be less of an expense to transport to Glasgow. I love to solve problems that have not previously been resolved, which gives me an excellent approach to research. Difficult problems do not discourage me; they give me a reason to work harder. I will also only need to extend my current visa, which is free of charge.
Write about your career and research interests and any previous research experience you might have had. My previous two summers were spent working as an engineer intern for Coastal Automation Services INC (Beaumont, TX) and Cross ISG (Knoxville, TN) learning practical engineering applications such as panel building, process control systems, and programming. While working at Coastal Automation Services I learned about power plants within the refinery and was exposed to distribution. I have not previously worked in research with a professor during school semesters because of other work and time commitments such as working two jobs freshman year, studying abroad and working two jobs sophomore year, and studying abroad whilst working two jobs as well during junior year. I am paying for my education from my own personal pocket, so unpaid research opportunities have not been a viable option in the past. Last year I received a scholarship from IEEE Power & Energy Society so I enrolled in several power classes this semester. I found the classes extremely interesting, and even though I am only half way through the semester, I would love to learn more about international power grids and supply operations.
Do you have any international experience? I have studied abroad four times including one summer in high school Christian Immersion Spanish Academy (Costa Rica, Summer 2012), Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne Australia, Fall 2015), Baylor in Greece (Greece, Summer 2016), Swansea University (Swansea Wales, Spring 2017 currently abroad). I have worked and taken upper level engineering classes while abroad in Melbourne and Swansea. I believe this gives me an excellent advantage because I have lived, travelled, and worked abroad. I can adjust easily to a new environment, am accustomed to engineering applications in other countries, and am currently taking power systems and power electronics at Swansea University in the United Kingdom.
