NEW DELHI: A city court jailed for
life on Tuesday a former driver
for hail-a-ride service Uber, two
weeks after he was convicted of
raping a female passenger last
year in a case that raised ques-
tions about womens safety in
Delhi and the viability of such
taxi aggregators in India.
Apart from giving the maximum
sentence for the offence, additional
sessions judge Kaveri Baweja also
slapped a fine of `21,000 on Shiv
Kumar Yadav for the rape and
for causing hurt, kidnapping and
criminal intimidation.

court said, maintaining that
ensuring womens security
required dealing with crimes
against them with an iron
hand. For the offence under
section 376 (2)(m) convict
(Yadav) is sentenced to rigor-
ous imprisonment for life which
shall mean imprisonment till his
remaining natural life.
Yadav drove the young woman
to an isolated area and raped her
after she booked a journey with
Uber while returning home from
a party in December.
The incident sparked nation-
wide outrage and led to Delhi

on Tuesday to protest against the
atmosphere of fear, intolerance
and intimidation being deliber-
ately created by sections of the
ruling establishment.
The Gandhis launched a sting-
ing assault on Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, accusing him
of endorsing incidents of hate
by his silence.
Some organisations, some
people who are connected with
Modiji or are part of the govern-
ment are making an assault on
the composite culture and basic
values of India. Intolerance is
being fuelled, said the 68-year-
old Congress chief with former
prime minister Manmohan
Singh by her side.
After handing a memo-
randum to President Pranab
Mukherjee at the end of the
1km walk from the Parliament
House complex to Raisina Hill,
the Congress leaders prodded
the PM for a response.
They said even the President
and personalities from the arts
and science have voiced their
concern on spiraling intolerance.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court
on Tuesday ruled out whole-
sale changes in the collegium
system but agreed to consider
suggestions on transparency,
criteria for selection of judges
and setting up a secretariat for
its efficient functioning.
The top court was hearing the
government, bar associations and
jurists to devise means to make judi-
cial appointments transparent after
it declared the National Judicial
Appointments Commission (NJAC)
unconstitutional.
Unanimously passed by
Parliament last year, the NJAC
act was to replace the collegium
system, where the top five SC
judges select other judges for

serious criminal cases against
his name, including one of rape
in Uttar Pradesh, and he had fal-
sified his references to land the
job. The US-based companys
licence was restored by the
city recently after it tightened
its driver verification process.
After the court pronounced its
order, Yadavs wife broke down
and refused to let go of her con-
victed husband. She collapsed
onto a chair and after some time
well-wishers calmed her down
and took her outside.

JAIPUR: A former Rajasthan MLA
died on Tuesday after fasting for
a month demanding a ban on the
sale of liquor in the state, trig-
gering a blame game between
the BJP government and the
Opposition over responsibility
for the death.
Doctors at the Sawai Man
Singh Hospital in Jaipur said
Gurcharan Chhabra (65) passed
away at around 4.30 am, a day
after he was moved to the facil-
itys intensive care unit.
He was admitted to the hospi-
tal a fortnight ago but continued
his fast, the doctors added.
He had gone into a coma and
was put on ventilator support
on Monday, said Dr Ajit Singh,
the hospitals additional medical
superintendent.
Chhabra had launched what
would be the last of his many
agitations demanding total pro-
hibition as well as strengthen-
ing of the Lokayukta in the state
from October 2, the birth anni-

Saraswati, a Hindu seer, died
in 2011 on the 115th day of an

NEW DELHI: The Delhi govern-
ment abolished on Tuesday 200
categories of affidavits required
to apply for a variety of public
services and allowed citizens to
self-attest documents for such
applications, drastically reducing
the red tape that often impedes
access to municipal utilities.
The new regime will come into
effect from December 1 and will
cover, among others, income, mar-
riage, caste, domicile, disability,
driving registration or correction
of birth or death certificates.
Till now, an applicant was
forced to run around the notarys
office for affidavits that were rou-
tine in nature. The government
has decided to do away with 200
categories of affidavits to prevent
people from unnecessary har-
assment and financial burden,
deputy chief minister Manish
Sisodia told reporters.
The decision was taken at a
cabinet meeting chaired by chief
minister Arvind Kejriwal. The
government also announced a
provision for stringent punish-
ment of anyone giving wrong
declarations.

ments, local bodies and other

officer to avail public services.

NEW DELHI: State education boards
have been asked by the HRD
ministry to give priority to the
revaluation applications of aspir-
ing engineers so that they get a
fair shot at countrys top colleges
including IITs, sources said.
Most of the state boards, a
ministry official said, were open
to the idea. Class 12 marks have
a huge bearing on admissions to
Indian Institutes of Technology
and National Institutes of
Technology as 40% weightage
is given to board scores when
entrance tests are evaluated.
According to officials, there
have been cases where students
scores have improved dramati-
cally after revaluation, affecting
their overall ranking.
It is yet to be finalised but
the ministry has suggested the
boards to give such students pri-
ority so that their results can be
finalised before submission to
JEE, the human resources devel-
opment ministry official said.
