Part 1: Unit Summary

Learning Statement
Tell the story of how you made sense of the different concepts throughout this unit. Be sure to hit all of the following talking points, and
include all activities/worksheets that are applicable. Be sure to address a habit of a mathematician and one are you might have grappled
with. You must use artifacts (in class activities and problem sets, notes, class discussions) from this unit as evidence.
1
1. Rational Functions ( f ( x)=
x
a. Describe how you made sense of rational functions (vertical asymptotes, y-intercepts)
b. Find/Create an appropriate meme or animated gif to describe your preparedness with these types of
problems.

2. Evaluating Functions
a. Describe how you made sense of evaluating functions.
b. Find/Create an appropriate meme or animated gif to describe your preparedness with these types of
problems.

3. The Arithmetic of Functions

a. Describe how you made sense of the using the operations adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing
functions.
b. Find/Create an appropriate meme or animated gif to describe your preparedness with these types of
problems.

1 What threw me off the most was the numerator, so in

Rational Functions ( f (x)=
x order to get passed it I ignored it for the most part.
Because I can not find the work After that I would make the denominator equal zero
and I believe it is the perfect and solve for x from there. That process was for the
example my evidence for rational asymptotes. For the y intercepts it was simpler
functions is Going to the Limit:
because we have been doing that type of graphing
Difficult Denominators
since the 9th grade.

Evaluating Functions For evaluating functions there wasn't much to it, all
that was required was to plug in for x. The only time it
got complicated was when we had to use distributive
property due to its lengthy process. I would plug into
the table and solve from there.
The Arithmetic of Functions Arithmetic functions was the most tasking part about
this section. Since it involved plugging two equations
into another equation it was always a lengthy process
where i had to write step by step in order not to lose
track.

Part 2: Practice Problems for the Test-ANSWERS TO PRACTICE PROBLEMS

1. Practice finding asymptotes and y-intercepts

1 1
f ( x)= 22=0 f (x)=
x2 2
x 49
Asy: 2 2
7 =4949=0
Y-intercept: f (o)=.5 Asy: 7
Y-intercept: 1/49

2. Practice Evaluating Functions

Let f ( x)=2 x1 and g( x)=x 21

f (0) f (1) f (1) f (a)

f (0)=1 f (1)=1 f (1)=21=3 f (a)=2 a1

g(0) g(2) g(3) g(t)

3. Practice Arithmetic of Functions

If f ( x)=4 x 2+3 x +2 and g( x)=2 x 25 x+ 2 find f + g , f g , fg ,f / g

(4 x2 +3 x+2)+( 2 x 25 x+2 )=4 x 2+3 x +2 x2 +5 x +4=4 x 2+2 x 2+ 8 x+ 4=6 x 2+ 8 x + 4
(4 x2 +3 x+2)(2 x25 x +2)=4 x 2+ 3 x +22 x 2+ 5 x2=4 x2 +3 x2 x 2 +5 x =4 x 22 x2 +8 x=2 x2 +8 x
(4 x2 +3 x+2)(2 x 25 x +2)=8 x 414 x 3 3 x 24 x +4
2 2 4 x 2+ 3 x
(4 x +3 x+2)/(2 x 5 x+2 )= 2
