Discussion
Based on our experiment that we have conducted which is Unconsolidated Undrained
Triaxial Test, the objective is to determine the shear strength parameter for clay soil. The
parameter include cohesive, Cu and angle of friction . For this experiment, we used four
different values of cell pressure which are 50kPa, 100kPa, 150kPa, and 200kPa. The proving
ring readings in division were recorded for every 20 seconds and stopped until it reached
20% from the original length, L0 which is the yield point for the sample to fail.

From the tabulated results, Axial Strain, 1 were calculated using the formula
below;

L
Axial Strain, 1= L( )
While for Corrected Area, A were obtained by using the formula;

A0
Corrected Area, A ( )
1 1

And for the Deviator Stress, the calculation were done using the formula stated below;

P
Deviator Stress, = A ( )
The moisture content was obtained through the formula of

w= ( moist massdry
dry mass
mass
) 100

All of the values that we gained from the formulas above were used to plot graph of
Axial Load, P versus Axial Strain, 1 . For all of the four graphs with different cell pressure
we have plotted, we obtained graphs with a pattern of the curve increase. As the axial strain
increase, the axial load also increases. From this graph the maximum load, d can be
obtained.
A graph of mohr circle was plotted which is shear stress versus normal stress by using
3 and 1 . Based on the graph, the value for cohesive is 0.075 N/mm2 and angle of
friction is equal to zero. However, mohr circle for 0.05 N/mm2 and 0.20 N/mm2 are not
satisfied for the graph to achieve zero angle friction.
While conducting the experiment, there are some possible errors might occur that
affected the result. The apparatus was not set up properly that cause the leakage to occur
during the experiment. Furthermore, our sample might exposed to air as the sample being
taken out earlier than the time for the specimen to be tested. This might cause our sample to
reduce its moisture. The apparatus were not in a well maintenance, so it cause many problems
to us while the specimen being tested. We as a student might lack of skills to conduct the
experiment. Overall, the experiment need to be repeat again to obtain a better result.

Conclusion
The conclusion is the shear strength parameter for clay soil was determined. The
value for cohesive, Cu is 0.075 N/mm2 and angle of friction is equal to zero. However,
mohrs circle for 0.05 N/mm2 and 0.20 N/mm2 are not satisfied for the graph to achieve zero
angle friction. So the experiment need to be repeated againachieve better results..
