Oscar nominees to be announced

“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”
An urban drama that stars Mariah Carey, Mo’Nique
and newcomer actress Gabourey Sidibe, this low-budget
non-fiction tells the tale of an obese, illiterate black teen-
age girl from the housing projects, who is forced to endure
emotional and physical abuse from her parents.

Although nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards
will not be released until Feb. 2, the betting game on which
film will win the Oscar for Best Picture has already begun.
From a science-fiction drama to heavy war films, this year’s
line-up proves to be full of strong contenders.
“Avatar”
This box-office phenomenon by James Cameron has
broken worldwide records by becoming the highest-gross-
ing movie of all time at the worldwide box office. Its suc-
cess makes it a shoe-in for a nomination.
“Inglorious Basterds”
This war movie by Quentin Tarantino is a unique take
on the classic war drama by mixing elements of gory
humor and timeless European cinema. A surprise hit of
2009, strong performances by big names such as Brad Pitt,
Melanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz, put this film in the
running.
“The Hurt Locker”
This widely celebrated film directed by Katheryn Big-
elow follows a risk-taking bomb disposal group during
the Iraq War. It’s already won the Producers Guild Award
for Best Picture ahead of “Avatar,” which makes the film
a strong contender in snagging an Oscar nomination for
Best Picture.
“The Blind Side”
Sandra Bullock’s strong performance in this tear-jerker
make this film nomination-worthy. However, many critics
argue that despite breaking box-office records, “The Blind
Side” just doesn’t make the cut when compared to “Ava-
tar” and “Up in the Air.”
Academy Award nominations will be announced by
Anne Hathaway on Feb. 2 at 8:30 a.m. in Los Angeles. For
