Conditions and consequences of the Great Migration of the Serbs in 1690 are described in great scientific
literature. Itispartlyusedinthisworkaswell.
Political,socialandmilitaryconditions,whichexistedinSerbiaintheendofthe17thcentury,aredescribedin
this work. Austria, relying on the Serbs a lot, wasforcingitswaytowardstheSouthoftheBalkanPeninsula.But,
because of Turkish consolidation and plague epidemic, it was defeated, and after that there was Turkish revenge,
whichconditionedtheGreatMigrationoftheSerbsin1689and1690.ThemigrationtookalltheSerbianethnicareas
ontheSouthoftheSavaandtheDanube.
SerbianinhabitantsarrivedtoUgarskaandcreatedculturalandpoliticalorganization.LifeoftheSerbsinexile
was led within own communities which erected churches, built schools, fought for the rights and privileges. Local
secularmastersandoneheadofthechurchledtheSerbs.FramesoftheSerbianethnicareawereformed.Gatherings
weretheimportantfactorinkeepingSerbianethnicidentitywhichenabledwiderconnections,moreintensivelifeand
culturaldevelopment.
TheimportanceoftheGreatMigrationoftheSerbs,nomatterhowdifficultitwas,wasusefulalot.Theprocess
of islamisation was slower in the areas under the Turkish rule. Inner connections on religious, cultural, military,
political and economy issues were strengthened. Ethnic conscience was kept alive, dating back from the Nemanji
SerbianMedievalState.Theirownlanguagewasformed,aswellasletters,domesticliterature,materialcultureand
spiritual creativity. Serban Sveti Sava orthodoxy was particularly important for the mass of people and it kept the
relationbetweenthenativecountryandinhabitedareaindifferentways.LifeoftheSerbsontheNorthoftheSavaand
theDanubewasslowlybecomingequalandthroughculturalandothertypesofcreativity,itwasconnectedinstronger
unity. The Great Migration of the Serbs contributed a lot to the development of the civil society which continued
developingandcontributeddevelopmentoftheSerbianstateonthewholeethnicarea.
