The criterion of Fornell-Larcker (1981) has been commonly used to assess the degree of

shared variance between the latent variables of the model. According to this criterion, the
convergent validity of the measurement model can be assessed by the Average Variance
Extracted (AVE) and Composite Reliability (CR).

Composite reliability is also used to check the internal consistency, which should be greater
than the benchmark of 0.7 to be considered adequate (Fornell and Larcker 1981). To evaluate
discriminant validity, the average variance extracted (AVE) is used.

In psychology, discriminant validity or divergent validity tests whether concepts or

measurements that are not supposed to be related are, in fact, unrelated. Campbell and Fiske
(1959) introduced the concept of discriminant validity within their discussion on evaluating
test validity.
