BIG BAKE

Saturday, October 22nd 2016

Broad Haven Baptist Church
10am - 1pm

This year , together with Tearfund , a leading relief and development

charity working in partnership with Christian agencies and churches
worldwide, we are raising monies through this ' BIG BAKE' . We know that
everyone ( well nearly everyone!) loves a good cake sale. Last year
across the UK there was raised 70,000.
Please come along to the Village Hall for tea/ coffee and the chance to
buy delicious cakes. Decide to bring along your own cakes to sell.....or
even buy ' shop cakes' to sell on.
The money raised will provide nutritious meals to those who need help
the most ; children in communities devastated by drought.
Thanks,
Ann Maull, Croft Road

Community Celebrations
Having completed 2 years of hard work during which the boardwalk has gone from
a dilapidated eyesore to an amenity the Havens can be proud of, locals & visitors
enjoyed a relaxed, social afternoon on Sunday Sept 11th. The Boardwalk picnic area
filled with families and the weather held and with thanks to Jonny, Les & Bob on the
BBQ, the crowds were fed burgers and hot dogs. Some brought their own picnics;
others shared home-made curries. Savoury treats were followed with home-made
cakes and brownies and of course FREE Ice cream courtesy of landowners Roger
& Raymond Raymond another kind & generous community gesture.
Were thinking of making it an annual event! [Photos]
So, if the entire infrastructure has been completed - What do the volunteers
do now?
Carry on is the answer! Our enthusiastic group has no intention of taking our foot
off the gas and we have many ideas and projects that we are looking forward to
implementing to continue to improve the habitat. BUT, this is only half of our work
now, NOW we have to begin to SAVE for the future.
Dont make the same mistake again!
In 15 years time, we dont want the Havens to find itself back where it was in 2014
with an important route that connects village, which is enjoyed by school children,
walkers & naturalists CLOSED due to safety fears & inadequate maintenance!
Start Saving Now!
Whilst we are lucky enough to have a genuine community spirit and know we can
call for help and we have a group of volunteers that will undertake regular upkeep Pembrokeshire Lantern Procession

Pond Dipping Did you know?

That you can download a FREE Pond-Dipping leaflet at
www.supporttheboardwalk.co.uk

A beautiful new Dipping Deck has been created and offers superb opportunities
for pond dipping. Dipping your net, or jar into the water is the best way to spot
pond creatures. Bring along a container and a magnifying glass too. Sitting safe-
ly behind the bars, pop your net or jar through and into the water. Sweep your net
gently through the water as you do, try to scoop creatures from below the water
as well as on the surface. Empty it carefully into your container and let the discov-
ery begin! Return the creatures and the water back in to the pond carefully

The Havens Community and Allotment Gardens

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness ... At the time of writing we're
having a wonderful Indian summer which has resulted in a bumper
crop of all kinds of berries. On the allotment the yellow and red
raspberries are fruiting very well. My Albion strawberries are still
flowering and producing fruit. And the freezer has several bags of
blackberries, ready to make into crumbles when the cold weather
starts. Admittedly, these are not home grown. There are some
wonderful leeks, onions, runner beans and giant celeriac plants on
other people's plots.

The arrival of two grandsons in quick succession has meant that my

allotment has been neglected this year, and it was with a heavy heart
and feelings of dread that I went up recently to see how it was faring.
I could just about remember where I'd planted the potatoes, so I
started to dig. It's usually fun digging up potatoes but these had been
in the ground for so long that I was sure they'd be riddled with slugs.
But no! The Charlotte variety had no slug damage at all. Monty Don
himself recommends it. I planted another sort, bought in Wilko's on a
whim, which has also thrived . I don't know its name. It's a cheerful
spud with bright red blotches on its skin, a bit like a clown's cheeks.

Slugs and snails have been a nuisance this year. They have feasted
on my squash and courgette plants and all but destroyed the
tomatoes and delphiniums in the garden. I grew them from seed, so I
was particularly cross. I don't like using slug pellets as a hedgehog
visits the garden every night, and I'm trying out other ways to keep the
slugs at bay. Coffee grounds and crushed dried eggshells help a bit.
Copper slug repellent strips work well. Best of all, though, is dog hair.
Just tuck it around the stems of your favourite slug- prone plants and
hey presto!

So my topical gardening tip is: groom a shaggy dog and use the hair.
Slugs hate it.

Weatherproofing was an essential element of the shelter as at the end of the
session Hurricane Heath provided a real test of the quality of the shelter. The
shelter stood strong through the battering of the wind but once the rain arrived it
proved to be not as water tight as Harry had hoped, overall everyone made a
sterling effort.
Next month we are going bat-ty, learn about
bats, use a bat detector and make your own
origami bat. Due to their nocturnal habit the
