The Director General of Civil Aviation issued a public notice regarding aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) training institutes in India. It notes that while the DGCA approves these institutes to provide ab-initio training, the 3-year programs are not recognized by the government as degrees or diplomas, making the time unproductive for students. To safeguard student interests, the University Grants Commission introduced a B.Sc. (Hons) in Aircraft Maintenance course and published a model syllabus. Training institutes can use this template to obtain university affiliation and offer higher education programs recognized by the UGC.

DGCA approves AME Training Institutes to impart ab-initio training
in the field of aircraft maintenance. A large number of AME students after spending three years in such institutes do not get employment. Since these courses are not recognised by any Government Body as degree or diploma, the 3 years spent by students in theses institutes becomes unproductive.
In order to safeguard the interest of AME students, the
University Grant Commission in consultation with Ministry of Civil Aviation has introduced a B.Sc (Hons) course in Aircraft Maintenance and a template for model syllabus has been published which is available at UGC website site at http://www.ugc.ac.in /pdfnews/0259615_BSc- Hons- Aircraft- Final-Syllabus .pdf.
The training institutes may use the template for obtaining
affiliation with UGC recognized University for higher learning.
