Conclusion/Discussion

Based on the observations of the melting points of combined substances, the conclusion can
be made that the melting point of urea in this experiment is 132.2C but in encyclopedia is
133 C which mean the urea is not pure enough because to make pure substance is very
expensive . . Pure substances tend to melt over very narrow ranges yet the compounds created
in the lab also had narrow melting point ranges The urea substances perhaps has mix whit
other substances when produced in factory ,which also resulted in a lower melting point than
that of pure urea.

An error that occurred in this lab was using a MelTemp apparatus that was already
heated or not cooled enough. If the temperature of the MelTemp apparatus was warmer than
the melting point of the substance, the melting point could not be accurately observed. If this
lab were to be repeated, it would be important to allow the MelTemp apparatus to cool
completely before each use. Another possible error is the capillary tubes. The amount of
substance in the capillary tube in each trial may have varied, which could cause variance in
the results. Capillary tubes should not contain more product than needed for testing and using
a consistent amount would reduce variance in results.

Laboratory Safety Precaution

1) Wear safety goggles and lab coat at all times while working in the laboratory.
2) Many chemicals are potentially harmful. Prevent contact with your eyes, skin, and
clothing.
Avoid ingesting any of the reagents.
3) Unknowns may be flammable, toxic, and irritating.
4) Capillary tubes are fragile and easily broken.
5) Wash your hands thoroughly with soap or detergent before leaving the laboratory.
6) Take care to avoid burning yourself when using paraffin oil, glycerol and electric hotplates
