Self-Employed----1998-2004

Janitorial/Domestic Services

Geneva, Ohio

Description: When my youngest child needed extra care at home, I began to look
for another way to earn a living. I contacted three successful female business
owners/partners in my area and I negotiated a position for myself by appealing to
the needs that every working, married, woman struggles with; How to stay in
control of the details of the home while working to build a successful career? I
proposed to care for all the deep cleaning of their home, do their grocery shopping,
run errands for their home and office, and maintain their laundry and cooking of
dinner. It was a successful venture, and in less than a year, I had contracted 16
clients. The list of my capabilities grew as well. After a year of business, I had
expanded to helping them decorate for Christmas, I was hired several times to set
up and host parties and picnics that they had. Because I am very personable, and
very much a people person, I was always asked to host parties that my employers
were having. I was also hired several times to house sit and handle customer
service calls while my employers were on vacation. I was entrusted with valuable
and confidential items and information, and never disappointed any of the people
that employed me.

Rob's Custom Upholstery--1991-1998

Office Manager

Geneva, Ohio

Description: I scheduled in-home service calls for three repairmen. This consisted of
knowing the type of repair the particular piece of furniture would need and the
approximate time that repair would take. It also consisted of scheduling eight to ten
service calls per repairman, calling each of those customers and setting up a
window of time for the call, and then mapping out the route of calls for each service
man. When the calls were done for the day, I would read over the description of the
repair and price the job. At the end of the week, I would write out a billing report of
each job completed for the furniture stores that we contracted bill the furniture
store. Any disgruntled, or unhappy customer were personally handled by myself, as
customer service was the core of our operation...Along with the customer service
issues my entire job consisted of, estimating in home service calls, in home
upholstery jobs, scheduling pick up and deliveries, managing the repair team,
managing and ordering supplies, billing, negotiating contracts with furniture
manufacturers and retail stores and a lot of P.R.. This was a fast paced,
multitasking job and I did it well. It was the first job I worked after deciding to enter
work force, and I learned a lot about organization, planning, time management,
negotiation, and bookkeeping.

Experiences:

Working with people has always been something that comes naturally to
me. The main avenue I continuously find myself traveling on is one that I am
giving someone a different view of their situation in order to relieve some of
their anxiety or frustration. I find that most people do not take the time to
see a situation from another's point of view, I am able to help them help
them discover that other point of view for themselves, which usually eases a
very frustrating situation in the moment . Most people are comfortable with
me immediately and I usually make any situation appear non-threatening.
People will generally open up to me within a few minutes of talking with me,
this is all due to no trying on my part, it has just always been that way for
me. So most of my experiences have involved helping people, educating
people, and just finding a way to open up communication in a difficult
situation.

In 2004 When I developed and implemented the summer reading program for the
children, in my city of Ashtabula Ohio, .that lived in some of the worst
neighborhoods in our area. It was a great learning experience for me. But, most
of all I was able to impart a little bit of hope into the hearts of many children and
that is what my sole purpose was for developing the program. My eyes were
opened to the many difficulties and hardships of the needy that are right in our own
neighborhoods. I contacted a local mission and asked to use their building for my
base, I became close friends with the pastor and wife that ran the mission and
learned a lot from them. Then I made up flyers and passed them out in the
neighborhoods that I felt would benefit from a reading program. The program was a
huge success and the attendance grew daily throughout the summer.

Last year (2008) I contacted the county jail in Jefferson, Ohio and asked permission
to hold a bible study for the women inmates. Surprisingly, I was permitted to meet
with the women once a week for as long as I wanted. I was the first person ever to
be permitted to enter and hold meetings with inmates that was not a licensed
minister! I have always had a desire to help people, and usually when I see a need,
I do not let the fact that it looks insurmountable deter me. In 2005,

I, contacted local hardware stores, dept. stores, and several independent people,
collected 1000.00, and bought outdoor paint for the building of a local mission. My
reason for pursuing my Masters Degree is for the sole purpose of being able to help
others in a much better way.

My most personal experiences took place when my husband was in Cleveland Clinic
when he contracted septicemia and had to have two heart valves replaced. I spent
17 continuous days and nights in the lobby of the hospital. I ran into the same
people day after day as I went outside for air on a regular basis. I became
acquainted with the other spouses and loved ones that were in the same situation
as I was. I would pray with them outside and they would share some of their most
treasured memories with me. I learned a lot about hurting people that year. I
knew then that I wanted to be able to help people that were hurting and I wanted to
be able to give them hope and comfort. Shortly after this experience I chose
counseling as my major.
