Instructional 1. Introduction.
Activities/Strate 2. Have students get in pairs, assign pair A and pair B, and get out pencils
gies and a piece of paper. Students will be creating a scene to perform for
the class. The whole class will be signed a starting line the first person
must say. Person B is suppose to start writing until they hear a bell,
then person A writes the next line until they hear the bell and so on.
Students must keep writing until they hear the bell. Before the
assignment is started, the students are given an ending line, just like
they are all given a starting line, all students are given the same.
Example:
A(Start line): Where are you going?
B(End line): Im leaving if you like it or not.
The students will write the middle part of that then perform their scene
for the class once they have finished and the class will discuss
characters, conflict, point of view, tone, and more.
3. Have students switch partners and give them a new starting line and
ending line. Repeat the discussion.
4. Show how tone can affect sentences by using I didnt say I stole your
red purse. Have students use a different tone on each word in the
sentence, showing how it can affect the outcome.
5. Hand out Explaining Authors worksheet and have students read the
stories/watch the videos as a class then discuss.
6. Closure Activity.
Accommodation If the videos dont work, play the song on phone, and have students improv a
s, scene and have students analyze that.
If necessary
Closure Activity Have students get out the book they are reading and point out an instance
that the author causes conflict for two characters, relate it back to the book.

Follow-Up/ Have students pay attention to their shows and movies they watch, really
Homework listen to what the characters are saying and think about their conflict, point of
view, tone, and everything else!
