MEX Workshop

March 2017
Day 1 Session Topic 4
Best Practices for Jetting and Landing
String Design
Material Supplied by
Well Examination Ltd
Why is Jetting used??
Saves time
Saves money.
Can drill ahead straight away.

When is Jetting used??

Known regional trend and good offset well data
Soil sample is available

When Not to use Jetting??

If there is complete lack of data on geological trend and offset
well data in the area.??
If there is a known problem of boulders on seabed??
If there is hard chalk on the seabed??

Jetting check list
Are the offsets close enough ??
Have you carried out soil strength analysis??
Have you carried out conductor bending stress
analysis??
Have you taken sea currents into account??
BOP weight stress analysis??
Drilling envelope window??
Minimum stick up height of the conductor??
Maximum stick up height of the conductor??
Jetting shoe ordered??

Jetting Instruction for a Well
( Dril-Quip Specific)
Make up the Cam Actuated Drill Ahead tool into
LPWHH as per Dril-Quips instructions. Drilling
Supervisor to witness shear pin installation and
verify the correct rated pins are used (75 klbs total
shear force)

Remove the 36" deep set bucket. Complete all Dril-

Quip checks and paint marks accordingly. RIH to
moonpool.

Install the slope indicator onto LPWHH bracket on

the conductor verifying correctly lettered slope
indicator compatible with primary LPWHH.

Jetting Instructions Contd..
RIH to +/- 1,800m MDBRT ( Mudline), take care
not to rotate the drill string while making up pipe.
Fill the string every 5 stands. Just top fill no need
to screw in. ROV to continually monitor markings
to ensure no premature rotation and possible
release. TDS brake on whilst RIH.

ROV to perform rough depth check with relation

to shoe depth and seabed.

Jetting Instructions Contd..
Space out so that the greatest distance is jetted after making up the
last connection. The depth markings should be visible at the mudline
and skin friction should not yet be approaching the maximum values
observed near final depth. Ensure that there will be sufficient stick up
after releasing from CADA tool to ensure it will be clear when making
next connection for drilling ahead 26 section.

With the ROV assisting, position the conductor above the planned
seabed location and ensure marker buoys are positioned +/- 5m from
conductor.

Note the weight and bulls eye readings. Establish slow circulation at
300 GPM to keep nozzles clear. Confirm MWD tool functioning (check
shot survey) prior to tagging. Tag the seabed with the compensator
open and note depth of tag. Slack off with compensator open and note
the initial penetration. ROV to confirm that the well is at the spud
location and monitor the slope indicator.

Jetting Instructions Contd..
DD to have jetting chart etc on rig floor for parameters to be recorded. Note that
CADA tool should not be put into compression as it can prematurely release. Lock
the TDS and keep compensator open whilst jetting. Drilquip to be on floor
throughout jetting operation.

Jet +/-5m at 300 GPM, increasing to 600 GPM. Survey and confirm verticality of
conductor 12-15m BML, 1/2 or less, thereafter maximum of 1. ROV to monitor for
broaching throughout entire jetting operation. Increase in stages to 1,000 GPM and if
no broaching and penetration OK, maintain this rate as a minimum to prevent
packing off. Should the MWD tool fail, continue jetting in using the slope indicator as
vertical reference. Office/town to be notified immediately as this may directly impact
DAT operations. Minimise reciprocation to what is absolutely necessary to make
progress.

Pump sea water as jetting fluid with 25 bbls pills of Hi-vis Gel sweeps at least every
single and spot 50 bbl pill before making a connection. Use the ROV to observe the
position of the Dril-Quip wellhead 36 conductor housing relative to the seabed. Jet
until the top of the wellhead housing is +/- 3m (10') above the original seabed tag.
Note that the maximum stick-up is 5m; if refusal occurs with more stick-up then DSV
to inform the Drilling Supt and attempt to recover the conductor for re-spud at the
backup location.
