Prepaid Electricity, Savings for Me!

Mrs. Lolita Alijan used to get electricity service by tapping to an electric

meter of her neighbor. But on July 11, 2016, she was among the 34 residents
of Aroma Housing in Tondo, Manila who has benefitted from the prepaid
electricity of MERALCO.

Maganda na yung ano (koneksyon) namin, na may sarili nang kuryente

load, she said.

On the other hand, Mrs. Imelda Angeles narrated that she used to pay about
PhP490 a month with her electric sub-meter. But now, she only allots PhP15 a
day for prepaid electricity.

Hataw sa TV yung mga anak ko. Dati kasi, pinagbabawalan ko kasi mahigit
PhP500 plus ang binabayaran ko.

Under the MERALCO Program, consumers will shoulder the cost of service
wires while the loadside breaker will be donated by One MERALCO
Foundation. In total, there are already more than 570 households that have
been provided with electrical connection. This was after DOE Secretary
Alfonso G. Cusi requested MERALCO to prioritize poor residents, being the
ones who get the brunt of high electricity charges and suffer accidents
related to illegal connection and/ or pilferage.

Medyo prone din ito sa overloading eh. Bukod dun sa overloading, prone sa
sunog, said Ferdie Geluz, Meralco VP and Head of Home and Microbiz-South
Business Area.

There are already more than 30,000 consumers who are now into prepaid
electricity. According to them, greater savings await consumers who will stop
the practice of illegal connection and switch to prepaid electricity.

80 percent savings, no? Of course, ang comparison nito is between cost

galing sa aggregators at saka yung costs galing sa MERALCO, Geluz added.

Given the numerous queries on prepaid electricity and the desire to shift
from traditional meters to this new scheme, prepaid electricity is also
expected to be introduced in Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan, and
Quezon City at the latter part of this year until 2017.
