YHS BAND SUMMER PRACTICE PACKET 2012-2013 TENOR SAXOPHONE CA YHS BAND i n. Ms. Kit wissas oo wo Briley g HOW TO USE THIS PACKET: ‘Ahh, summer vacation!! Time to relax, have fun, and unwind after a busy school year. Now that you have oodles of free-time stretching out ahead of you...why not use some of it to practice and get better at your band instrument?! I guarantee that if you use the recipe below and practice at least 4 days a week, you will notice a marked improvement in your musical ability by the end of the summer! Recipe for an effective 30 minute practice session A big part of successful practicing is playing with a consistent tempo. Therefore, you should ALWAYS practice with a METRONOME. If you do not own one, you can buy a $.99 app for your smart phone, or use one FREE online at: http://www.metronomeonline.com/ 1. Warm Up-— 5 minutes Warm ups are supposed to be easy...and a bit boring. They are meant to allow you to focus on taking a good breath and playing with a beautiful, clear tone. Analogy: If you play a sport, I'm guessing your practice will usually begin with your team stretching-out together. Playing your instrument is also an athletic event for your lips! These muscles need a chance to stretch and loosen in order for your practice session to be most effective. Believe it or not, a good warm up (that you do at least $ days a week) is the best thing that you can do to get better at your instrument!! 2. Seales and Technique — 10 minutes Scales and technical exercises are like vegetables, you might not think they are delicious, but they are a. necessary part of a balanced musical diet! These exercises are meant to help your finger dexterity and your articulation. You might find them frustrating, but practice them slowly (and one measure at a time) and you will improve! 3. Music — 15 minutes ‘Abh, finally! This is the FUN part! Choose one of the short solo songs or one of the Pep Band pieces included in this packet. Use your 15 minutes to focus on figuring out a difficult rhythm, the right notes ‘and the correct fingerings. Then try playing through the song, or a section of the song. Or, practice the duets in this packet with someone who plays the same instrument as you do! OR, get a big group of your band friends together and play some of our fun Pep Band songs! Remember! The goal of your practice session is to be BETTER at the end than you were at the beginning. Fingering Diagram Note the use of small and large case letters in this diagram to indicate specific keys. Fingering Chart Standard fingepings are listed first, with the alternates following in order of priority (For example, Side B? is the standard and 1-4 Bb is the least used.) Letters and/or darkened circles ( @ ) indicate the keys to be depressed; open circles ( ) indicate the keys not de- pressed. Refer to the Fingering Diagram ‘for an explanation of letters and. numbers. ‘The information found in parentheses beneath some fingerings is the name assigned 10 that specific one. = eoolece eooleoe g ecole eoeloee eoolcoce oVeele ooeleece e e e e ° ° e ° ° ° e ee ee eo 70 e e e e S$ 0 0 0 @ 0 0 ‘o e e © 02 090 0 0 © 0 6 oe e oc 9 9 © © «6 0 0 oOo e@ ° ° © yo 09 e€ 0 0 0 co 0 @ e ° © °0 0 0 0 60 0 0 oe ° (S) (bis) (1-5) (1-4) (SC) (covered) E bs e 7e 7@ 7° 70 e °o ‘oO © 0 0 0 o o 0 0 0 e © po 0 e Oo o "0 © 0 o (fx) (S) (bis) (1-5) (1-4) 2 fa be te ba = x x x TO T@® TO TO TO, TO.» TO TO,bTO TO,’ TO TO e ° ° Od Od OG @ Ofd @ ofd e e ° ° ° ° °o ° e fo} °o ° ° ° ° ° ° ° °o fo Oo fo °o fo & ° oO co ° ° ° ° oo ° flo f 2b © 09 0 0 0 © © 6 60 0 °o "oO (sc) (front) (from) (front (from 2 wif #) wb?) yo oo?
